Zelda Fanart Spotlight – Link vs Phantom Ganon
Posted on June 13 2012 by Hachi
Today’s Fanart Spotlight is from a self-taught artist that goes by the name of doubleleaf. Link vs Phantom Ganon is a brilliantly drawn scene of the memorable Ocarina of Time battle. As Link is dashing away, trying to put some distance between himself and his foe, Phantom Ganon looks to be in a very confident position. The artist uses the placement of the characters to make this a tense scene, the two even exchanging glances at each other.
This artwork has very neat and delicate line work, and the shading is done with the same amount of care. Although cel-shading techniques like these can often suffer from feeling too flat, the artist here uses subtle gradients to create more visual interest to the piece. The background uses a different technique and done in a more painterly style, is different enough that it also helps create a greater sense of depth.
Artwork of boss battles often capture the sense of urgency the player felt during their first playthrough. Replaying bosses can often feel like going through the motions once you know their weak point and attack pattern, which is a real shame. Thankfully we have epic fanart such as this one to remind us of how awesome they actually are.
