Zelda Fanart Spotlight- Kill the Plant

For today’s Fanart Spotlight, we are going to take a look at a picture inspired by The Wind Waker called “Kill the Plant” by Finnish artist Merrycka. It features Link facing the Forest Haven final boss Kalle Demos.

Although this piece retains The Wind Waker’s distinct cel-shading look, it has a style of its own. The color choices help create dramatic lighting. The pitch dark background makes the neon bright colors on the plant-based boss pop, the faint light radiating off it’s figure drenching Link in a cool blue hue. The artist also adds a few small touches, including the game’s hearts and magic bar.

However, the coolest part of this picture for me is that it was created entirely in MS Paint, proving that you don’t need an expensive program to create art with expressive lighting and an interesting composition–you just need talent.
