Thanks once again to the dazzling linguistic skills of GlitterBerri we are now able to appreciate past insider information as though it were hot off the press. The behind the scenes commentary of the design and integration of the islanders of Windfall Island are now revealed in English, right on time for The Wind Waker HD release expected this fall.

The translated pages feature a discussion between some of Nintendo’s finest, including Eiji Aonuma, Satoru Takizawa, Mitsuhiko Takano and Yoshiki Haruhana. These developer quotes are taken from pages 32 and 33 of the Zelda Box, a 116-page guidebook for The Wind Waker released only in Japan back in 2002.

The highlighted characters are Tott, Salvatore and a few other honorable mentions like Candy and Minenco. Some of the fun facts revealed in this exclusive dialogue include that Salvatore is one of Miyamoto’s favorite characters and that one of the inspirations for Tott was Bubba Ho-TepĀ  Elvis Presley.

I find these small glimpses into the intentions and musing of the developers fascinating. Information like this can really add a stronger sense of completion to any well-produced game, especially a game as full and ambitious as The Wind Waker. The attention to detail and the amount of thoughtfulness put into the game only confirms for me why I love the Zelda franchise as much as I do.

Aonuma: What I want players to pay attention to is the fringes hanging from his sleeves. They move very beautifully! [Laughs] The programmers really did their best on those.”
