Zelda 25th: Remembering Four Swords Adventures
Posted on November 15 2011 by Knowlee
An article was posted up on GameInformer by Dan Ryckert and in the article he talks about Four Swords Adventures, the Zelda game on the Gamecube where you could play with three other friends while adventuring around Hyrule. It had a single player mode, but it wasn’t as fun to play when compared to the multiplayer aspect. But in order to play the multiplayer mode, you had to have a Gameboy Advance for each player as well as a Gameboy to Gamecube cord for each GBA to use to connect the two machines to each other. He mentions this during the article and describes how annoying it was just to have to get those things to play with friends.

To play four-player, each player had to have a Game Boy Advance as well as the cable that allowed it to connect to the GameCube. I was in my junior year of college when Four Swords Adventures released, and most of my gamer friends were more interested in finishing their degree than keeping up to date with portable gaming consoles and their peripherals (what the hell was the matter with them?). I knew one friend with the required components, so I had him come over the night the game came out. We played for a couple of hours and had a blast fighting over rupees and throwing each other into pits of lava. We had so much fun that we decided to halt our playthrough so we could experience the rest with the full four-player line-up. We tried to wrangle up friends with GBAs for a few weeks, but things never panned out. Our two-player game was never finished, and I found single-player to be a shadow of what the game was supposed to be.

I’ve played Four Swords Adventures a few times before both on the single player and the multiplayer modes. Just as the author felt with the single player mode, I felt that it wasn’t as fun as it was with the multiplayer. The multiplayer aspect is what makes the game so fun and gives the game a certain charm to it. But as the author mentioned it’s difficult to be able to play that part of the game especially when if the person who has the game has a lack of funds to buy the required items or just a lack of people to play with. I know when I bought the Gameboy Advances and the cords I needed to play that it was very expensive and I don’t think I’ve ever payed that much just to play a game the way it was intended.
