ZD Gallery: Reuniting with Mido
Posted on May 03 2015 by Alasyn Eletha
Welcome to this week’s ZD Gallery feature! As it is Sunday, it’s time once again to show off an awesome fan and their equally awesome contribution to the Zelda franchise. This time around I thought it would be fun to take a step further than fan art and go with a fan made comic. This comic is titled Reuniting with Mido and was created by DeviantArt user G3no. The comic is so beautiful, both vibrant in color and since it’s based on a rather touching scene from Ocarina of Time. However G3no actually has some pretty mixed feelings about that moment.
Make the jump to check out our interview with him!
ZD: When did you become a fan of the Zelda series?
G3no: I believe it was around when I was 6 or 7; Ocarina of Time was gifted to me. On the first run I got stuck too many times and I had to drop the game (due to my English not being very good at the time). The person that gave me the game guided me a little bit in the early stages a few years later, after that it was a gaming experience like no other, as the rest of the world says.
ZD: Do you have a favorite game?
G3no: It is, without question, Majora’s Mask. Its mind blowing and a little bit sad that to this day a game this old cannot be surpassed by a new one (including other Nintendo games.) I could go on forever talking about why; of course this is merely just my opinion.
ZD: What inspired you to make art for the franchise / Why did you want to create a comic of this particular scene?
G3no: Back when I was 7 as mentioned above, my English was not even near decent. I literally got stuck with Mido- and his simple task of getting two items- and dropped the game. I believe that bad memory built stronger over time and gained a tremendous hate for the character. I didn’t even notice he apologized on the first play through. I had the urge to beat the game a 2nd time (and more in the future) and that’s when I witnessed the apology. All that waiting made it feel even better. It’s a bit crazy.
ZD: Do you think that it’s changed your view of Mido, seeing as he’s a fairly unpopular character?
G3no: Nah, I don’t think it will. A concept will mean something different to each person depending on how they experienced the game. It would be nice to know others might have gone through the same thing I did though, hah!
ZD: And finally, do you have any ideas or plans for future Zelda related projects or comics?
G3no: I wish I could say a guaranteed “Yes”. It’s not a main focus right now. I might however post Zelda related art at unexpected times. I will say, though, I AM doing another Zelda piece.
There you have it! If you’re interested in seeing more of G3no’s work, follow this link to his DeviantArt page, or this link to his Facebook page. He’s got plenty of other pieces, including a Tetra doodle.
What do you guys think of G3no’s comic? I adore the fairies, if you’re paying attention to their expressions, especially Mido’s. When you first played Ocarina of Time and witnessed Mido’s apology, did you feel different about him than your initial impression of him at the beginning of the game? And if G3no were to come out with more comics, what would you want to see from him next? As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below!
