Would You Rather: Edition XIII

Would You Rather (block)Hello and welcome back to Would You Rather! Last time we had a great response so let’s get ready to do it again! After reviewing the comments it seems that the majority of you would rather traverse the Death Mountain caves because you’re sick of the cold. Maybe we should ask again in the middle of July and see how you all feel then! If you missed out on our previous issue you can check it out here. As usual, this week we have a fun match up for you guys, so hit the jump and make your choice!

We are all familiar with the roles of masks in Zelda games, most notably Majora’s Mask. But what about the other games that use masks in mini-games or side quests? The Mask of Truth is almost ubiquitous for fans who started or continued playing after the Nintendo 64 was the console to have, what with all the Gossip Stones in Ocarina of Time that can give you hints about the game. I thought about what some cool masks might be to have, when you discount the obvious, like the transformation masks, which we all decided on in another WYR edition. Personally, I think the most overshadowed aspect of masks is the Happy Mask Shop in Ocarina of Time. Although we see the Happy Mask Salesman again at a later time, there is no mention of his shop or how the business is going. We are left to assume that; a) it failed and he is seeking better merchandise; b) he closed it up in order to temporarily seek out his dream mask (Majora’s Mask); or c) those masks on the counter really were all he had and Link made the guy run out of stock on absolutely everything.

The Happy Mask Shop had four different masks Link would take out and find suitable owners for and four bonus masks, but not all of them are really WYR material. For example, there are two masks that resemble the transformation masks, yet do nothing, so we will not consider the Goron or Zora masks. The Bunny Hood is an all-time favorite and it would be unfair to have such a choice when we’re talking about less appreciated masks. We all know what the Mask of Truth does and although it would be a fun choice, we can’t have five options! Finally, I am going to discount the Spooky Mask, as it serves no function except to make the kid in the graveyard a little less annoying. So that leaves us with the Keaton Mask, Skull Mask and Gerudo Mask. Usually we don’t have three options but it’s always fun to mix things up! Which brings us to our competition: would you rather own the Keaton, Skull or Gerudo Mask?

Each of these masks has an ability that can help Link (or you) in his/your travels. Check out the attribute lists below to see which one is the best to you!

Keaton Mask

  • Allows Link to meet with Keaton, a multi-tailed fox who rewards cunning travelers after a test of wit.
  • Although we never hear Keaton’s voice, I always imagined him as a posh, British fox who enjoyed brunch, tea and crumpets along with not-so-impressive riddles, making him pretty entertaining to be around when he’s not being annoying.

Skull Mask

  • Gives Link the ability to hang out with Skull Children in the lost woods without fear of their blow dart guns.
  • Many rewards can be gotten while using this mask and it appeals to humans and supernatural beings alike.

Gerudo Mask

  • A mask that almost randomly makes people like or dislike you. Although this doesn’t count as an ability in the usual sense, the mask is incorporated for comedic effect, and the responses you get from various NPCs in the game are completely worth it.
  • The mask won’t fool any gang of female pirates, but it’s still pretty sweet, in that it can provide hours of entertainment.
  • If you’ve ever been too shy to strut around town with a flashy symbol from whatever franchise makes you want to ditch Earth and find that adventure, then this is the item for you! Not only is it bold and hilarious, but no one will see your face!

Now that you’ve jogged your memory a little bit on these masks with lesser powers, which do you think is the best? Tell us which you would rather own and use in the comments!
