Would You Rather: Edition IX

Would You Rather (compact)Hello and welcome back to Would You Rather! I have another exciting match up for you today that I hope you will enjoy as much as I do! Last week we discussed what kind of heroes we would all want to be, and it certainly looked like many of you chose to be unknown so that the pressure to succeed was less and you could stop if you really wanted to. However, a fair amount of you chose to be the hero of destiny so that you would be loved, revered, and most importantly, guided. With completely valid reasoning on both sides, I can’t help but say that I agree with all of you. If you missed out on last week’s edition, you can check it out here. As for this week, unfortunately your choice does not effect the fate of the world, but it certainly would provide a stark contrast to your current life. Hit the jump to find out more!

A popular thought when playing Zelda games is how it might be if you were some other kind of creature, particularly in Majora’s Mask, where the seemingly mindless or overly aggressive creatures are suddenly portrayed as intelligent species with their own cultures. Once a player obtains a mask and enters into the world of the Deku, Goron or Zora tribes, the societal values and strengths completely change. The Deku have a royal family, live in a swamp (even though they can’t swim) and seem to be generally angry. The Goron tribe lives in a magically warm place in the mountains, seem to be kind of dull-witted and are picky eaters. The Zora decorate with seaweed and shells and it seems like their entire population is made up of soldiers or, in the case of Majora’s Mask, musicians.

This week we are going to look at two of the three tribes and see which one sounds better to be. I have taken out the Gorons as an option because being able to roll really fast, burst spikes out of your body and light yourself on fire seems like an unfair advantage. Not to mention you can punch anything and everything into oblivion. Which brings me to the ultimate question of the week: Would you rather be born into the Deku or Zora tribe?

Deku Scrub v. Zora

Deku RoyaltyZora king

Both of these species have some fun qualities, so lets go ahead and explore them.

Deku Scrub

  • You are so light that you can briefly skip on water, and fly through the skies with nothing but a couple flowers.
  • You can burrow into various kinds of large plants, making it easy to hide or to ambush people.
  • Technically, you do have a formal “government,” but most of you will ignore their wishes because you seem to be always angry.
  • If you are hit with fire, you die. If you fall in water, you die.
  • Your people are diverse and creative, as showcased by the use of secret codes, the invention of torture and a wishy washy legal system. Not to mention those fun hats and using your boogers as ammo!.
  • You are master businessmen, obtaining and peddling wares to all passersby, possibly leading to the discovery of singular items.

Zora

  • There is really no telling if you will be a warrior, a fire-breathing, large-mouthed fish, or even a famous musician! If you are up for a gamble at a chance for greatness, step on up!
  • If you do become a warrior (and it seems that all personified Zora are warriors in some way), you get to do cool things like fling your apparently detachable, projectile appendages at things, as well as bore through giant monsters with a magic coating.
  • You have a fairly simple government, or system of rule, with a king or queen and sometimes a frisky princess. If you’re into that sort of thing, maybe you should really consider being part fish yourself!
  • Not only do Zora tribesmen and women have the ability to be warriors practically pumping through their bloodline, but talent in the arts is also prevalent, as shown with their famous guitarists, vocalists, architects and more. So even if you aren’t particularly minded toward the army, there will still be a place for you.
  • Contrary to the Deku, your royalty is useless in such a way as to be inactive and unhelpful instead of over zealous and unhelpful. It’s really a choice of the lesser evil on that one. Laissez faire or consistently violating what rights accused persons are promised?

If you ask me, both of these tribes have their merits, and which you choose really just depends on your preferences for a lifestyle and your priorities for making a full life of your own. So which would you like to be born as, Deku or Zora? Let us know in the comments!
