Falling Spikes are traps from Ocarina of Time, The Faces of Evil and The Wand of Gamelon.

Ocarina of Time

Falling spikes are attached to platforms held by chains in the Shadow Temple. They periodically fall and, if Link is underneath them when they do, he will void out, resetting the room and costing him one heart of health. A sign nearby advises that the "rain of blades" can only be protected against using a "stone umbrella" which can be found with the "eye of truth"[1]. This is a reference to a nearby Stone Block hidden inside a wall, which can be seen when using the Lens of Truth. By pushing it along, the spikes will hit the block rather than Link, and he is protected.

Once accessible, he can run along the flat top of the falling spikes without injury. This is required to access chests with a Small Key and rupees.

Non-Canon Appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

The Faces of Evil

Falling Spikes appear in The Faces of Evil in largely the same fashion as their The Wand of Gamelon counterparts.

The Wand of Gamelon

Falling Spikes from The Wand of Gamelon

Spikes fall from above and they will try to harm Zelda. They are found in set locations, are usually indoors, and fall in precise patterns. Be patient to find the pattern, and then move quickly to avoid being hit. At times, there are entire areas filled with spikes, and they can be quite difficult to avoid. Using the Cloak is an expensive, yet safe way to avoid taking much damage from spikes. Much like their Boulder counterparts, spikes cannot be defeated.
