The Life Tree Seedling is a young Tree of Life in Skyward Sword.

Skyward Sword

"The seedling of a legendary tree whose fruit is said to cure any ailment. It will take a long time for it to grow and mature."

— In-game description

The Life Tree Seedling was planted in Lanayru Gorge by Ancient Robots in an attempt to grow a Life Tree Fruit that could heal the fatal illness of Lanayru, the Thunder Dragon. Unfortunately, the conditions were unsuitable for it there, and it withered and died. Consequently, Lanayru also died.

When Link, in search of the Song of the Hero, came to learn Lanayru's part, he found the dragon's bones lying where he expired. Using a Timeshift Stone, he was able to revert them to when the dragon was ill, but still alive. Lanayru tells him that the fruit of the Tree of Life could heal him, but that the Robots' attempt to grow a seedling in the gorge had failed[1]. By moving the timeshift stone, Link can revert the seedling back to a living state, and take it with him. Lanayru, Fi and the robots all tell him when asked that the seedling cannot grow in Lanayru Province, and must be grown somewhere with very rich soil, producing a fruit quickly enough to save Lanayru[2][3][4][5] - a tough task, given that it "require[s] several thousand years to mature"[6].

The only way Link can successfully grow the tree to produce a fruit is to take it through the Gate of Time in the Sealed Temple to the distant past, when the building was known as the Temple of Hylia. Planting it there, in the past, changes history so that when Link returns to the present, he finds Groose admiring a full-grown Tree of Life[7], bearing one Life Tree Fruit. He can then harvest the fruit and take it to Lanayru to heal him.

  1. "The robots were worried about me, so they planted a seedling from the Tree of Life. The fruit of this tree is said to be able to cure any illness... They planted the seedling over there. Cough... But it just won't grow. Cough... I think this is the end for me." — Lanayru, Skyward Sword.
  2. "We wanted Master Thunder Dragon to get well, so we planted a seedling from the Tree of Life, which bears a fruit that is said to cure any illness, vrrm. This area is only good for growing grass and flowers, zrrt. If we can't find a way to grow the seedling quickly... Our master will not make it, bzzt..." — Ancient Robot, Skyward Sword.
  3. "I don't think there's any way that seedling would ever mature if you planted it in the Lanayru area, vrrm... We need your help, brrzrrt! Master Thunder Dragon needs the fruit from the Tree of Life to regain his strength!" — Ancient Robot, Skyward Sword.
  4. "What's that, [Link]? You say you will find a place where the seedling will grow quickly for me? That would be a great help... All I would need to do is eat one piece of fruit from the Tree of Life to recover my full strength. But that seedling cannot be planted just anywhere. Look for a place with very rich soil." — Lanayru, Skyward Sword.
  5. "I project that the soil in Lanayru Province will not provide enough nourishment for the Life Tree Seedling to grow and produce fruit. In order to obtain this fruit, which the Thunder Dragon seeks, you must find a place to plant it where the tree can grow strong over many long years." — Fi, Skyward Sword.
  6. "A seedling planted here would require several thousand years to mature. I would suggest not planting one at this location." — Fi, Skyward Sword.
  7. "Is this tree something or what?! No wonder it's called the Life Tree!" — Groose, Skyward Sword.
