Cadence is a character in Cadence of Hyrule. She is one of the three main playable characters along with Link and Zelda.

Biography

In Crypt of the NecroDancer, Cadence is the daughter of famed treasure hunter Dorian. One day, Dorian went missing while trying to find a magical Golden Lute that could resurrect his dead wife, Cadence's mother Melody. While searching for her father, Cadence fell into a crypt and died from the fall; She was resurrected by a dark sorcerer, the NecroDancer, who separated her heart from her body and refused to let Cadence leave until she traversed the crypt and killed him. Cadence spends the game attempting to kill the NecroDancer, with the movement of herself and the NecroDancer's minions linked to her heartbeat.

In Cadence of Hyrule, the Triforce transports Cadence to Hyrule, after Octavo places both Link and Zelda into a magical slumber and takes over the kingdom. While searching for a way home through a crypt, she finds portals leading to both Link and Zelda; After travelling through one portal, Cadence awakens one of them, before leaving the party to keep searching.[1] If the player is in a co-op save file, Cadence will remain in the party.

In a single-player save file, Cadence can be encountered in four different Caves around Hyrule, still struggling in vain to return home. The caves are located in Lake Hylia, Death Mountain, Lost Woods, and Gerudo Desert; She can also be found in a fifth cave at Link's House, where she will give the player a spare Shovel (a spare Torch can also be found behind a diggable wall). For the other four caves, Cadence will grant new Items as follows:

After being encountered in all four caves, Cadence realizes that she won't be able to leave Hyrule until Octavo is defeated, noting that he reminds her of the NecroDancer.[2][3] Cadence will then rejoin the party, and can be switched to and from at active Sheikah Stones; If she wasn't already unlocked, Cadence will join the player in the Future World. After Ganon is defeated, Cadence receives the Triforce of Power; Link and Zelda then give her their respective pieces, explaining how the full Triforce can grant wishes if one is worthy of it. With the completed Triforce, Cadence wishes to be sent off, and is teleported to places unknown.

In-game, Cadence can use most weapons and items. She uses the Shovel Strike as her offensive technique, the Shield as her defensive technique, and Greatshovels as her unique weapon class.

Nomenclature

In music, Cadence is a progression of chords that ends a phrase, section, or composition (harmonic cadence) or a rhythmic pattern that indicates the end of a phrase (rhythmic cadence), with the purpose of creating a feeling of resolution. This is related to the story of Crypt of the NecroDancer, where Cadence is trying to find a resolution as to the fate of her father Dorian.

In a more literal sense, cadence comes from the Latin word cadentia, which means "a falling". Cadence was cursed by the NecroDancer after she fell into the crypt.
