"This octopus-like species of monster lives in volcanic regions. When they inhale, they're preparing to spit out flaming rocks but have been known to suck up weapons or bombs in the same breath."

Breath of the Wild Hyrule Compendium entry

A Rock Octorok is an enemy in Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild

Rock Octoroks can be found in the Eldin region, where they make their home beneath rocks. If they spot Link, they will jump out of the ground, before absorbing in a large amount of air, which they then use to fire a volcanic rock at Link. The best way to defeat them is to wait until they jump out of the ground, start inhaling, then loosing an arrow into them. They only have 8 HP so most bows will be able to take them out in one shot. Another way to defeat them is to throw a remote bomb into their mouth while they are sucking. After it goes into their mouth, promptly detonate it to kill it. Upon death they may drop an assortment of Octorok items, but they will burn up quickly due to the high temperatures of Death Mountain.

If they suck up a Rusty weapon or Rusty Shield, they will spit it back out as a "clean", Hylia Series equivalent, with the exact weapon depending on a combination of World Level and random chance - the higher the World Level, the higher the chance of a Knight or Royal version, rather than Traveller or Soldier. However, be careful, as the brand-new weapon spit out by the Octorok can do damage to Link if it is not dodged or blocked.

Trivia

  • Rock Octoroks, in spite of not living close to any bodies of water, may drop dead fish upon being slain.

Age of Calamity

Rock Octoroks in Age of Calamity are the most common variants, appearing in an assortment of scenarios. They hide beneath rocks and are first encountered during either the Daruk, the Goron Hero or the Urbosa, the Gerudo Chief scenarios. Upon being defeated, they may drop an Octorok Tentacle, Octorok Eyeball, or an Octo Balloon. After each Rock Octorok is defeated, the player will receive an Octorok Trophy, which can be used to complete quests or upgrade weapons of the various warriors.

Their weapon-cleaning properties are the subject of the Improve Services Quests From Rusty to Trusty, Better Rust-Busting, and Road to Rust Research.

Tears of the Kingdom

TODO: More details needed about the improvements; what can they do, how does it change later in the game

As enemies, Rock Octoroks function as in Breath of the Wild.

Their weapon-cleaning properties have been modified - now, each Rock Octorok improves only the first weapon they suck in during an encounter. In addition, rather than cleaning Rusty (or Decayed) weapons or shields to pristine condition, they apply a positive Weapon Bonus to the properties of many weapons, bows and shields without changing the type. In the early game, this is a white bonus such as "Attack Up +4", "Critical Hit" or "Durability Up". Feeding a weapon with a white bonus to another Rock Octorok may further improve it to a yellow bonus, such as "Attack Up +6". In addition, they will repair any non-legendary item which is "badly damaged" to new.

Legendary items can be fixed by fusing them to another weapon or shield, dropping that for the Rock Octorok to repair, and then having Pelison break them apart at the Break-a-Part Shop.
