The Hylian Shield is a recurring shield in The Legend of Zelda series.
It is the traditional shield of the Knights of Hyrule and is one of the main shields in the franchise - Link often uses the shield alongside the Master Sword in the 3D games. The Hylian Shield is made from light and sturdy metal, making it optimal for use with one-handed weapons, and has maintained a consistent design throughout the franchise.
Appearance
The Hylian Shield is a wooden shield with a steel overlay and accents. The base of the shield is painted blue, with symbols of the Triforce and the Crimson Loftwing used by the Hero of the Sky, painted in yellow and red respectively.
Link's Awakening
The Hylian Shield appears in the Nintendo Switch remake as Link's Shield. It is mapped to the R button, and has the same properties as the Shield. It is later replaced with the Mirror Shield.
Ocarina of Time
In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the Hylian Shield can be purchased from the Bazaar for 80 Rupees; however, a free one is located inside of the graves in the Graveyard, which can only be accessed at night. After Link has given Zelda's Letter to the Death Mountain Trail Gatekeeper, the Hylian Shield will receive a random discount, reducing the price to 45-75 Rupees. Additional Hylian Shields are found in various Treasure Chests around Hyrule, although they are replaced with a Blue Rupee if Link already has one. It is later replaced with the Mirror Shield.
The Hylian Shield is an upgraded version of the Deku Shield, as it does not burn when exposed to fire. However, the shield is too heavy for Young Link to use properly, so he keeps it strapped to his back, and crouches to use it as a turtle shell while defending. As a result, this decreases his mobility while defending and doesn't protect Link's front - instead, it defends attacks coming from above Link, which is required to get past the rockfalls on Death Mountain. Adult Link is able to use the Hylian Shield normally.
Twilight Princess
In Twilight Princess, the Hylian Shield can be purchased from Malo Mart for 200 Rupees after Link has cleared the Twilight from the Eldin Province; a Goron in Hyrule Castle Town will also sell it for 210 Rupees. It is indestructible compared to the Ordon Shield and Wooden Shield, making it the strongest shield in the game, although it will deflect Arrows that strike it instead of catching them.
Skyward Sword
In Skyward Sword, the Hylian Shield is obtained from the Lightning Round, and is the prize for winning eight consecutive fights before quitting. It was forged by the Thunder Dragon Lanayru, with the Lightning Round serving as a test to see whether Link was worthy of it.
The Hylian Shield is the strongest shield in the game; it is able to block both fire and electric attacks, and is completely indestructible due to being blessed with sacred power.
A Link Between Worlds
"A shield that's based on Hylian design. Raise it with [R] to block flames and beams."
In The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the Hylian Shield is the dungeon item of Turtle Rock. Because Link can choose which order to complete dungeons in, the Hylian Shield can be acquired fairly early or even at the end of the adventure.
The Hylian Shield replaces the standard Shield when obtained. It is able to block both fire and magic-based projectiles, and will not be destroyed if Link is swallowed by a Like Like.[3] This makes it very useful against projectile-using enemies, particularly in the Treacherous Tower.

Base Shield Guard | 90 | |
Base Durability | 800 |
"A shield passed down through the Hyrulean royal family, along with the legend of the hero who wielded it. Its defensive capabilities and durability outshine all other shields."
The Hylian Shield has a base Shield Guard of 90 and base durability of 800, making it the best shield in the game. It is found in a large room in the Lockup of Hyrule Castle, which contains a Stalnox - if Link defeats it, a chest appears containing the Hylian Shield. There is a stone slab in the room stating that this was a test room for the Royal Guard, meaning a Hinox would need to be defeated in single combat for one to become a member of the Royal Guard.[4] This is the only time the Shield will spawn here, as further visits to the Lockup will not manifest the chest. The Hylian Shield thereby obtained may have durability bonuses.
The Hylian Shield is one of the absolutely best shields in the game for shield surfing due to its high durability. Provided it's not used for anything else, and taking into consideration its average friction rate (1/4 durability point/sec) and its durability (800), the shield can be used more than 53 minutes of surfing without breaking.
Link can only have one Hylian Shield at a time. If the shield breaks, Link can go to Tarrey Town to buy a new one from Granté for 3,000 rupees, provided the side quest From the Ground Up has been completed. In addition, if you display this shield in your house near Hateno Village, this shield will not be available for purchase. Also, the shield bought from Granté will not have any possible durability bonuses.
Bonuses
The shield will only have bonuses while it stays at the Lockup. As mentioned before, the shield sold by Granté will not have modifiers regardless of whether the initial shield had them.
The bonuses depend on the level of progression in the game, and the shield in the Lockup only will present high (yellow) modifiers the longer the game is played, so if one is pursuing the highest values, the later the shield is picked up, the better.
Due to the fact that there's only a scant amount of non-Lynel enemies that would necessitate a 90+ Shield Guard to disarm with a Perfect Guard, and given that Lynels themselves do not drop their weapons under any circumstances unless killed, it may be preferable to obtain a Hylian Shield with Durability Up modifiers so that it lasts longer.
Link's Awakening (Switch)
Link receives the Hylian Shield from Tarin at the beginning of the game. It replaces the Level-1 Shield. If Link loses the shield (eaten by a Like-Like, for example), a new one can be purchased from the Town Tool Shop or won at the Trendy Game.
Age of Calamity
When Link equips the Master Sword, the Hylian Shield is automatically used as his shield.

"A shield passed down through the Hyrulean royal family, along with the legend of the hero who wielded it. Its defensive capabilities and durability outshine all other shields."
The Hylian Shield is in a chest in the Docks under Hyrule Castle, in the exact location Saas Ko'sah Shrine was in Breath of the Wild. It is also accessed in the same way, by lighting a fire in the nearby beacon, although the wood inside the beacon is gloom-afflicted.
As in Breath of the Wild, its base shield guard is 90, and base durability is 800, both far in excess of any other shield. However, as Tears of the Kingdom bonuses are capped at +10, the maximum shield guard it can have is 100, and maximum durability is 810. If fused to a melee weapon, it has a fuse attack power of 22 and makes the weapon blunt.

Soulcalibur II
In Soulcalibur II, the Hylian Shield is among Link's most common shields, used with almost every weapon he wields. It is his default shield, as it is used when combined with the Master Sword. Link also uses the shield with the Razor Sword, Megaton Hammer, Cane of Byrna, Biggoron's Sword, Great Fairy's Sword, and Bug Net. Out of Link's 11 weapon sets, only four do not use the Hylian Shield.
Skyrim
In the Switch release of Skyrim, the player can use Amiibo to get items. The Zelda series Amiibo have a chance of giving the player unique gear. Among these is the Hylian Shield, which is essentially just an Elven Shield.
Trivia
- The Fighter's Shield from A Link to the Past is very similar to the Hylian Shield in the official artwork for the game. This shield was probably the basis for the Hylian Shield.
- The Hero's Shield from Majora's Mask and The Wind Waker are both very similar to the Hylian Shield.
- In Ocarina of Time, the Hylian Shield features a fourth, upside-down triangle below the Loftwing. This could be the inspiration for the Light Force from The Minish Cap.
