Breath of the Wild Amiibo
Unlocking Amiibo
Before amiibo can be used, you must first acquire the Paraglider and leave the Great Plateau. Once this is done, the option to enable amiibo will be available in the system menu.
After turning on amiibo in the system menu, a new 'Rune' will be in the rune menu, all the way to the right. Select this rune and 'use' it on the ground. This preps the game to receive an amiibo. Tap the amiibo figure to the controller as usual to activate the amiibo.
Amiibo can only be used once per real-life day. This seems to reset at midnight based off the time settings on the console.
All amiibos will work with Breath of the Wild, even ones that are not related to the Zelda series. However, non-Zelda amiibo will simply give random items and have no specific exclusives.
Many of the Zelda-series amiibo have a chance to give exclusive items in addition to their first-time use bonus. It is therefore worth it to use them daily until these exclusive items are collected, if desired.
Wolf Link
Wolf Link is an exception to all other amiibo. Activating the Wolf Link amiibo will summon Wolf Link as a companion. The following are points of information that relate only to Wolf Link:
- Wolf Link can be summoned as many times as you wish, unless he dies. Then he will be put on the same once-a-day timer as all other amiibo.
- Wolf Link can be healed if he has taken damage. Simply drop anything edible near him. He will often seek out edible items on his own, unless commanded to stay.
- Wolf Link is very aggressive. If he sees something that can be attacked, he will attack it. He will wake up sleeping enemies, including world bosses. If you do not want him to do so, command him to stay.
- To command Wolf Link to stay, target him and press A. Do so again to tell him to follow you.
- No other characters in the game will recognize Wolf Link's presence. There's no easter eggs or character conversations or anything like that. Only you and the enemies can see him or even know he's there.
- In fact, Wolf Link refuses to enter villages, shrines, or dungeons. He will also despawn if you get too far away from him without an opportunity for him to teleport closer (long paraglide voyages often trigger a despawn). Also, you will occasionally get "cannot be used here" errors in other locations as well when summoning, although if you summon elsewhere and bring him there, he's fine (which is weird). And finally, you have to resummon him every time you die or teleport or go where he can't go. In fact I personally have to resummon him 10-12 times an hour during normal gameplay (which is really annoying and I really hope Nintendo releases a patch to fix that, wow.)
- However, he is quite happy to run beside you while you are on a horse, no worries.
- When the Sensor or Sensor+ rune detects something nearby, and Wolf Link is not preoccupied attacking wildlife or enemies, and if you're close enough, and other unknown conditions are correct, Wolf Link will trot off in the direction of what is being sensed. If he gets to far away, he will turn around and sit, waiting for you to catch up. If you head in a different direction, he will follow you. This behavior is not 100% dependable as he is again easily distracted, but when it happens it's helpful.
- Wolf Link has a default health of 3 hearts, however, using the game Twilight Princess HD, his maximum health can be increased. To do so, collect as many heart pieces or heart containers as you can in Twilight Princess HD, and then use the amiibo to run the wolf trial in that game, and the health remaining at the end of the trial will become the maximum health in Breath of the Wild. Note that the best method (for Breath of the Wild's sake) is to first collect the maximum of 20 hearts before ever doing the wolf trial, then do the 5-level trial, and use the wolf link amiibo to heal yourself right before you leave. It is unknown if completing the 15 and 30-level versions are necessary. However, all three results are recorded on the amiibo, and Breath of the Wild will use the highest result of the three.
