Chumin is a character in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild

Chumin is a traveler and he can be found traveling from the Highland Stable, through the Sarjon Woods, past the Lakeside Stable, as he travels his way all the way to Lurelin Village. He makes his way all the way to Lurelin Village where he will stop to rest under a tree outside the Fishing Resort, before then turning around and travelling back. He travels alongside his donkey and also serves as a traveling merchant, selling some of his goods. On rainy days, Chumin will change up his inventory, selling a Hearty Blueshell Snail, instead of the usual Bright-Eyed Crab.[1]

Chumin will talk about his adventures as a peddler, primarily selling goods that he has acquired from Lurelin Village.[2][3]

Chumin speaks very highly have the All or Nothing game found at Lurelin Village. It is a game of chance where Link can earn rupees. Chumin enjoys playing the treasure chest game and each time he travels to the village, he stops by and plays the game, before then turning around and venturing back on the road.[4][5] Despite that, he does tell Link that purchasing items from him is a far better bet than playing the treasure chest game.[6]

Chumin will also serve as a traveling guide, giving Link directions to Lake Hylia, as well as mentioning a nice spot at the Finra Woods.[7] However, Chumin sense of direction isn't the greatest, as he once wandered into the Faron Woods with a map and got lost.[8]

As the Faron region is often filled with heavy rain and lightening, Chumin will often take shelter along the road whenever possible.[9] Chumin doesn't mind the rain, but his Donkey hates the droplets that fall on him. Chumin has a very close bond with his donkey and doesn't know if he could go on if something were to happen to his friend.[10]

Tears of the Kingdom

Chumin can be found trapped in the Mapla Point Cave, at the east end of Hyrule, east of Hateno Village. After being saved, he can be found walking along the path between Hateno Village and Kitano Bay.

A Bottled Cry for Help

Main article: A Bottled Cry for Help

On the Hateno Beach, a Bottled Letter can be found. The bottle has a letter from Chumin. He set out fishing, but the storm caused him to have to take shelter in a cave. While taking shelter, a big rock came crashing down, trapping him within a cave. Despite not being able to get out, he was able to release some Brightbloom Seeds and the Bottled Letter through a gap and into the water. He is hoping that somebody finds the letter and follows the Brightbloom Seeds back to the cave.

From Hateno Beach, Link can create raft and follow the line of Brightbloom Seeds, which lead all the way to Mapla Point Cave. After moving a boulder out of the way, Link will discover Chumin. If Link previously found the letter, Chumin is delighted, as he thought the letter in a bottle was a longshot that anybody would actually find it.[11][12] Link could rescue Chumin without ever seeing the bottle, of which point, even after being saved, Chumin is disappointed that it wasn't found, and he's down on his luck.[13][14]

Regardless of whether Link found the Bottled Letter, Chumin soon realizes he's free and that his lucky is turning around.[15] He will then reward Link with a Silver Rupee.[16][17] Even after he is just saved by Link, he immediately turns into a salesman, encouraging Link to find him later to buy some fish from him.[18]
