Zol
Zol is an enemy in the Zelda Series frequently featured in 2D titles.
Legend of Zelda
In The Legend of Zelda, Zols are common in beginner dungeons, most prominent in Level 1: The Eagle. When attacked with the Wooden Sword, or any weapon with the same strength, it splits into two Gels. Otherwise, it is killed.
A Link to the Past
In A Link to the Past, Zols first appear while Link is making his way through the Swamp Palace. First coming in Red Form, Zols will appear from underground when Link walks nearby. These slimy creatures will slowly creep towards Link, occasionally hopping in his direction.
They are slow moving and Link can get rid of them with one swipe from his Master Sword. A whole variety of projectile items work just as good, including the Hookshot. However, if a Zol does come into contact with Link, it will take away two full hearts of damage.
Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons
There are two forms of Zols, red and green. Red Zols are more powerful. With a weak weapon, a single hit causes one to break into two Gels. If Link comes into contact with these, they will not damage him, but they will slow him down and leave him unable to use any weapons. Green Zols only take one hit, but they can take Link by surprise. When he walks across certain areas of the floor, green Zols will come out of hiding and attack, though they are easy to defeat.
