King Dodongo |
King Dodongo is the boss of the second dungeon, Dodongo's Cavern, in Ocarina of Time.
History
Ganondorf heads to Goron City to retrieve the Spiritual Stone of Fire, from Darunia. When Darunia refuses to release it, sensing that Ganondorf is evil, Ganondorf sends King Dodongo to Dodongo's Cavern, the Goron's feeding spot, and seals it up with a giant boulder, thereby causing a famine for the Gorons. Ganondorf promises to open the cave and remove King Dodongo only if and when Darunia gives him the stone.[1] Darunia keeps the Goron's Ruby safe and faces difficult times for his people until he is visited by Link.[2]
Strategy
King Dodongo begins the battle with a fire attack. These fire attacks are the opportunities Link is waiting for. Before he exhales flame, he inhales, allowing Link to feed him a bomb by throwing it in his open mouth. King Dodongo is stunned momentarily, providing Link with the opportunity to attack him with a Jump Attack with a Deku Stick or the Kokiri Sword, the Deku Stick technique dealing much more damage.[3] He then curls up, preparing to roll around. In order to avoid King Dodongo's rolling attack, Link can stand on the sloped inside of the ring near the lava. Whenever King Dodongo rolls, he always goes halfway around the ring, bouncing off of one corner and stopping at the next. Once he rolls past, Link can follow close behind him. After, he can repeat the process by throwing another bomb. In the instance that Link runs out of bombs, Bomb Flowers are available in every corner of the arena. Unlike many other bosses in Ocarina of Time, there is no "second-phase" to this battle. Once Link strikes the final blow, King Dodongo roars before rolling into the lava in the middle of the room. A Heart Container appears by his head along with a portal that is waiting to send Link to the outside of Dodongo's Cavern. At this point the lava has hardened and cooled to rock, so Link can walk on it.
Reward
Once Link has stepped into the portal, he is taken to the spot where the giant boulder stood at the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern. Darunia drops from the sky right in front of Link and congratulates him on a job well done. He then gives him the second Spiritual Stone, the Goron's Ruby.
Four Swords Adventures
King Dodongo is the boss of the Realm of the Heavens stage.

All this trouble must have been caused by that Gerudo thief, Ganondorf! He said, "Give me the Spiritual Stone! Only then will I open the cave for you!" You, on the other hand, risked your life for us..." — Darunia, Ocarina of Time.
- ↑ "What the heck! Who are you?! When I heard the song of the Royal Family, I expected their messenger had arrived, but... you're just a little kid! Has Darunia, the big boss of the Gorons, really lost so much status to be treated like this by his Sworn Brother, the King? Now, I'm REALLY angry! Get out of my face, now! Are you asking why I'm in such a bad mood right now? Ancient creatures have infested the Dodongo's Cavern! We've had a poor harvest of our special crop, Bomb Flowers! Starvation and hunger because of the rock shortage! But..." — Darunia, Ocarina of Time.
- ↑ "Hey, let's work on some moves! To jump sideways while (Z) Targeting, press (A) as you move right or left. To do a backflip while (Z) Targeting, press (A) as you move backwards. To do a roll attack while (Z) Targeting, press (A) as you move forward. While you roll, you can avoid damage. If you have your sword ready while (Z) Targeting, you can do a jump attack by pressing (A)! A jump attack does double damage! You can use (Z) Targeting on the stone next to me, so let's practice!" — Kokiri, Ocarina of Time.
