Hardhat Beetles are recurring enemies in The Legend of Zelda series.
A Link to the Past
Hardhat Beetles are first encountered within the Tower of Hera atop Death Mountain. These slow moving creatures have a lot of armor, causing Link to ricochet back after he hits one with the Fighter's Sword. When there are holes in the floor or other enemies nearby, Hardhat Beetles can be quite the obstacle, as the ricochet can send Link down a hole or right into another enemy.
There are two forms of Hardhat Beetle, although they are nearly identical to one another. The sole difference is that the Red Hardhat Beetles have significantly more health and take more damage to defeat. The standard Blue Hardhat Beetle can be defeated with three strikes from the Fighter's Sword, while the Red Hardhat Beetle takes an outrageous sixteen sword slashes to defeat.
To avoid the ricochet threat, Link can attack Hardhat Beetles in a number of different ways. He can use Bombs or the Hookshot to temporarily stun them, making it much safer to deliver a sword slash.
Link's Awakening
Hardhat Beetles are encountered within Tail Cave, Bottle Grotto, and various caves throughout the Overworld.
Hardhat Beetles are giant armored insects that constantly run towards Link. Hardhat Beetles are always found in rooms with holes in the floor. The easiest way to get rid of these annoyances is to push them back with the Sword into the holes on the ground. Link's Boomerang and Hookshot freeze Hardhat Beetles, which might make it easier to defeat them. The only weapon that can actually harm them is Bombs, but it can be hard to line up an attack since they are always moving.
Oracle of Seasons
These enemies are extremely annoying, as there are only two ways to get rid of them. The first way is to repeatedly whack them with the Sword until they fall into a pit. The second way, while much easier, cannot be used as often. It consists of pulling one of the magnetic N balls towards Link, and wacking them with it. This strategy is actually required in areas with no pits handy. They can be annoying in groups, as they don't stop coming towards Link. Avoiding them is the best way to deal with them, but often Link must defeat them to open up doors, which can be rather bothersome.
Oracle of Ages
Since these enemies are invincible, trying to use any weapon as means to defeat them by just hitting them is simply pointless. The only way to get rid of these pesky, constantly persisting enemies is to repeatedly whack them with the Sword until they fall into a pit. They can be annoying in groups, as they don't stop coming towards Link. Avoiding them is the best way to deal with them, but often Link must knock them into pits to open up doors, which can be rather bothersome.
Phantom Hourglass
Hardhat Beetles first appear in the Temple of Courage. To defeat them, Link must drive them into a bottomless pit with his sword. Once Link acquires the Hammer from Mutoh's Temple, he can instantly defeat these enemies by smashing them with the hammer.
