The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is a remaster of Skyward Sword for Nintendo Switch. Announced in the February 17th, 2021 Nintendo Direct; it was released worldwide on July 16th, 2021.
"Originally released in 2011 for the Wii system, and depicting the earliest story in the series' timeline – as well as the creation of the Master Sword itself – The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword game now arrives on Nintendo Switch with smoother and more intuitive controls, in addition to improved framerate and graphics. In this enhanced version of the game, running at a smooth 60 frames per second, you can choose to play using motion control with the two Joy-Con controllers in a similar way to the original, or use newly added button-only controls to play the game with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, in handheld mode or using a Nintendo Switch Lite system. A set of themed Joy-Con controllers will also be released alongside the game: the right Joy-Con controller is themed after the Master Sword, while the left features the Hylian Shield motif. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, and the themed Joy-Con, launch separately for Nintendo Switch on July 16."
Changes from the Wii Version
- The graphics have been upscaled, and the game renders in 1080p while docked or 720p in handheld mode, rather than the 480p of the Wii version.
- The game now runs at 60 frames per second instead of 30 fps.
- Link can be optionally controlled with buttons, with sword moves controlled via the right stick and the shield via clicking the left stick, instead of motion controls. These are obligatory in handheld mode, or while using the Switch Lite's inbuilt controls.
- The camera can now be freely controlled on the right stick while using motion controls, or with L + right stick using button controls.
- The game now autosaves to a fourth save slot, while the player can manually save their game to any of the three available slots rather than the game being locked to one slot.
- Dialogue moves faster and can be skipped more quickly in many cases.
- Cutscenes can be skipped even if the player is not in Hero Mode.
- Some tutorial dialogue has been cut down or become optional. In certain cases where Fi would provide repetitive information, her icon will now flash instead, allowing players to optionally listen to her.
- The Sheikah Stone has been removed.
- The Zelda & Loftwing amiibo can be used to go to the sky immediately from the Surface without a Bird Statue.
