The Pictograph Box, also known as the Picto Box, is an item used to take pictographs in Majora's Mask and The Wind Waker.

Majora's Mask

In Majora's Mask, the Pictograph Box can be obtained after rescuing Koume from the Woods of Mystery. Once she has been rescued, she returns to her post at the Swamp Tourist Center, as the Boat Cruise guide. If Link takes the Boat Cruise ride, Koume will give him the Pictograph Box.

The Swamp Tourist Center holds a contest on the First Day to see who can take the best pictograph. If Link manages to take a pictograph of the Deku King, he will win a Piece of Heart. Furthermore, the operator in the Tourist Center will also reward Link if he manages to take a pictograph of his son, Tingle.

As the game progresses, the Fisherman of Great Bay insists that Link takes a pictograph of one of the Gerudo Pirates as part of the quest to locate the Zora Eggs. If Link is successful, the Fisherman will reward him with a Seahorse, which he captured near Pinnacle Rock.

Unfortunately, the Pictograph Box can only store one pictograph at a time.

The Wind Waker

The Wind Waker (GCN)

The Pictograph Box is referred to as the "Picto Box" in The Wind Waker. Instead of taking a single pictograph at a time, it allows Link to take up to three at a time. He can find this device in Tingle's jail cell, located on Windfall Island. It can be obtained by entering his cell, moving a large box, and solving a maze. Link must successfully make it through the maze without falling into any traps whatsoever. The Picto Box is preserved in a treasure chest at the end of the maze. With the standard Picto Box, pictographs appear in black and white once taken.

Deluxe Picto Box

Main article: Lenzo's Pictograph Assistant

The Deluxe Picto Box is the upgraded version of the Picto Box. Instead of taking black and white pictographs, they instead appear in color. This item is required for Carlov to carve figurines for the Nintendo Gallery, as he will only accept colored pictographs. He must also give Anton a coloured pictograph of Linda to earn a Piece of Heart.

To upgrade the Picto Box to the Deluxe Picto Box, Link must complete Lenzo's Pictograph Assistant side quest. In the original release of The Wind Waker, this also requires Link to capture a Forest Firefly in a bottle from the Forest Haven and give it to Lenzo. In return, Lenzo will improve the Picto Box to take colored pictographs. In The Wind Waker HD, this final step is not required.

The Wind Waker HD

In The Wind Waker HD, the Picto Box is improved. It is capable of holding up to twelve pictographs instead of three. Additionally, the Deluxe Picto Box is obtained from Lenzo himself after Link completes three tasks for him and becomes his assistant, removing the need for the Forest Firefly. Link can also take pictographs with himself in them. Also, when Link takes a pictograph which can be made into a figurine by Carlov at the Nintendo Gallery, a symbol appears in the upper left of the photo.

All pictographs could be posted to Miiverse until its deactivation.
