Rafts are recurring items and objects in The Legend of Zelda series. They are used by Link to travel across large bodies of water, like a lake.[1]

The Legend of Zelda

The only use of the Raft in The Legend of Zelda is to travel across large bodies of water to reach the other side. The Raft is found in the third dungeon of The Legend of Zelda, Level 3: The Manji; and in Level 4 of the Second Quest. It can only be used from docks.

In the First Quest, there are only two of these:

  • The Raft is required to reach Level 4: The Snake, as it is found on a little island that is found in the middle of the large lake in the middle of Hyrule. If Link walks up to the dock in the screen right below the dungeon, he can walk off and the Raft automatically takes off and sends Link to the entrance to The Snake.
  • On the other side of Hyrule, there is also a small island that is seemingly unreachable. However, Link can use his Raft again and he is sent right to this island. On this island, there is an entrance to a cave that looks very much like a dungeon. Inside, the Old Man offers Link a Heart Container and a 2nd Potion. He says to choose whichever one Link wants.[2] This is one of four of such locations.

The Adventure of Link

The Raft is found inside the Island Palace. Once acquired, Link can travel to Eastern Hyrule via the dock near the Harbor Town of Mido. This is the Raft's only use in The Adventure of Link.

Link's Awakening

Link can hire a raft from the Raft Shop to negotiate the Rapids Ride in the east of Koholint Island. During the ride, jumping from the raft at the right time can gain him the floating items including Magic Powder, rupees, hearts, arrows and bombs. He can disembark at stairs out of the water to obtain items on islands he passes by.

Oracle of Ages

Rafton, who lives south of Lynna Village in the Past, builds a Raft for Link to sail to Crescent Island if he has brought the Cheval Rope, which Link must obtain from Cheval's Tomb in the Present.[3]. With this raft and the Island Chart, Link can head for Crescent Island, but along his journey, he gets caught up in a storm and the raft is destroyed - however, when he wakes up, he still finds himself on Crescent Island.

Raft on the River of the Dead in Breath of the Wild

Rafts appear in Breath of the Wild, but not as obtainable items. Instead, they can be found all over Hyrule, by lakes, oceans etc. Link can use these rafts in conjunction with a Korok Leaf in order to control the raft's speed and move in a desired direction.

Tears of the Kingdom

While there are relatively few rafts simply lying around in the world in Tears of the Kingdom, Link can make ones from loose logs using Ultrahand. In addition, some Shrines of Light contain pre-built rafts, and the Yiga Clan use rafts in their water-based Depths bases.

Non-Canon Appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

BS The Legend of Zelda

The Raft is found in Week 2, in Level 3 of MAP1 and Level 3 of MAP2. In both cases, it is used in Week 2 to reach Level 4, which is located on an island similar to the Level 4 island of The Legend of Zelda; and in Week 3 to reach the north-east corner of Hyrule where Level 5 is sited, along with the Magical Sword in Week 4. A whirlpool blocks access to the Level 5 area before the start of Week 3.
