Lizalfos are recurring enemies in The Legend of Zelda series. They are usually experts at combat and are even sometimes armoured.

Ocarina of Time

Lizalfos
Use your shield well and fight
with (Z) Targeting techniques!

Lizalfos in Ocarina of Time have little armor, yet are very agile. They are not a very common enemy, and are not very powerful either. Link first encounters this enemy in Dodongo's Cavern, with Lizalfos serving as the minibosses of that dungeon. The best way for Link to defeat them is to use a shield to block their attacks, causing the Lizalfos to lose its footing for a short period of time, allowing Link to strike. The Lizalfos can leap over attacks and usually run away to another platform after taking two strikes. Even when there are multiple Lizalfos, they will not attack Link at the same time. Instead, they will run away, and have only one charge at Link at a time, before alternating. Deku Nuts may stun them for a short period of time, allowing Link a window in which he can strike them with his sword.

Twilight Princess

Lizalfos in Twilight Princess are much different than in Ocarina of Time. Link first encounters them in the Lakebed Temple. In this instance, they barely have any armor, and have only a pitiful shield. The Shield Attack and Back Slice are very effective strategies to defeat them, in addition to a later Hidden Skill, the Helm Splitter. After Link obtains the Master Sword, they become one of the more plentiful enemies in the game.

Skyward Sword

FiIcon.png

Lizalfos in Skyward Sword resemble lizards, but also possess human-like attributes. They wield stone gauntlets, which they can use to block Link's attacks. These Lizalfos have a very defensive attack strategy. They normally dodge out of the way of any attack tried with the sword unless they are taunting Link. When taunting, they protect themselves with the stone gauntlet. If Link's sword hits the gauntlet, they will immediately attack with their tail. They can also breathe fire to damage Link. Directional slashes are necessary to hit this enemy, followed by crazed sword slashes. They can endure 9 hits with the Goddess Sword before dying.

Dark Lizalfos

Main article: Dark Lizalfos

Found in the Fire Sanctuary, Dark Lizalfos exhibit the same behavior as normal Lizalfos, except they are faster, and breath dark smoke which curses Link, making him unable to draw his sword or use any items for a short amount of time.

Breath of the Wild

A standard Lizalfos

Lizalfos in Breath of the Wild have adapted to their environment by being able to camouflage in with their surroundings, even adhering to walls. They use this new ability to ambush an unsuspecting Link. Using a bow is among one of the most reliable strategies to defeat them, as one or two shots to their heads will generally take them out. There are many different types of Lizalfos in Breath of the Wild, such as the standard Lizalfos, or Fire-Breath Lizalfos; with 10 distinct types, they're the enemies in the game with the most variations. If meat is dropped on the ground in front of them, they will pick it up and eat it, restoring the entirety of their health. Although they do not recover any health from consuming them, all varieties of Lizalfos prey on insects too, and will consume them if they are swarming nearby.

Lizalfos in Breath of the Wild are based upon chameleons, sharing their extensible tongues and ability to change colors, as well as a passing resemblance to species such as Jackson's chameleon. Unlike chameleons, aside from bipedalism, Lizalfos are tremendously swift creatures, to the point that they can keep up with a horse at full canter.

Lizalfos in the game are shown to be markedly intelligent (considerably more than Bokoblins and a bit more than Moblins), and are shown to have conversations in their rudimentary language, as well as being well-versed in sophisticated metallurgy for armor and weapon making. Lizalfos never forge two-handed weapons themselves, but may wield one of a different series.

If Link wears the Lizalfos Mask or Majora's Mask in front of a Lizalfos, the Lizalfos will not attack him, but rather investigate him. However, if Link directly attacks the Lizalfos while wearing the mask, the Lizalfos will realize his true identity, and will attack. If he attacks any one Lizalfos in a pack, all of the monsters will attack.

When slain, basic Lizalfos may drop up to two Lizalfos Talons, and will drop one Lizalfos Horn.

Blue Lizalfos

A stronger variant of the basic Lizalfos. They are often seen wielding reinforced lizal-weapons, such as Lizal Forked Boomerangs or Strengthened Lizal Bows. Upon death, they drop a Lizalfos Horn and two Lizalfos Talons, and may also drop one Lizalfos Tail.

Black Lizalfos

Even more powerful than the Blue variant, these Lizalfos are most often the leader of their pack. They shoot arrows at a greater rate than other Lizalfos, and they usually carry even stronger weapons, such as the Lizal Tri-Boomerang.

Fire-Breath Lizalfos

Main article: Fire-Breath Lizalfos

This variant of Lizalfos appears primarily in hot regions of the game, such as on Death Mountain or in the Gerudo Desert, but may also appear in Akkala. They act in a very similar way to regular Lizalfos, but are also able to spew fire. Link can avoid taking damage here by holding out his shield, running around the Lizalfos, or, if he has all three pieces of the Flamebreaker Outfit equipped and enhanced at least twice, the fire will deal no damage at all. Any ice-infused weapon, such as an Ice Arrow, will instantly kill them. Upon death, the Fire-Breath Lizalfos will drop a Red Lizalfos Tail, in addition to some miscellaneous Lizalfos items.

Ice-Breath Lizalfos

An Ice-Breath Lizalfos
Main article: Ice-Breath Lizalfos

These variants of Lizalfos are found in the coldest regions of the game, such as in Hebra. These Lizalfos have the unique ability to spit out many icy balls at will. If these balls come into contact with Link, they will freeze him, and leave him vulnerable to other attacks. Upon death, they will drop an Icy Lizalfos Tail, alongside two talons and one horn. To defeat an Ice-Breath Lizalfos, simply strike them with a fire weapon or shoot a fire arrow at them to immediately vaporize them.

Electric Lizalfos

Main article: Electric Lizalfos

Electric Lizalfos are found by far the most frequently in the Gerudo Desert, where they lie and wait beneath the sand before jumping out to ambush Link. They can create a large dome of electricity at will, which may cause Link to drop some of his equipment. They will drop a Yellow Lizalfos Tail when they are taken out, with the two talons and horn.

Silver Lizalfos

These are the most dangerous and powerful versions of the Lizalfos in the regular mode of the game. They are much more aggressive than any other versions, and have a far faster attacking speed with bows. They have significantly more health than weaker variants, and have triple the health of the Black Lizalfos alone. Upon death, they almost always drop rare gemstones such as Sapphire or Topaz, as well as an assortment of Lizalfos parts (one tail, two talons, and a horn).

Golden Lizalfos

Golden Lizalfos are found exclusively in Master Mode, and have even more health than their silver counterparts, although they carry the same weapons and drop the same items.

Stalizalfos

Main article: Stalizalfos

This variant of Lizalfos only appears at night, and behaves very similarly to creatures such as Stalchildren from previous games. They only have 1 HP, but when struck, they will not take any damage. Instead, their heads will drop to the ground. Link must attack their heads to kill them. Even after falling, the Stalizalfos’ skeleton will eerily reassemble itself, and will continue to attack Link, often exchanging weapons with the rest of its group. In order to fully rid himself of the Stalizalfos, all members of one group must have their heads destroyed. They almost always appear in groups of two or three.

Cursed Lizalfos

A Cursed Lizalfos
Main article: Cursed Lizalfos

The Cursed Lizalfos only appears in areas tainted by the Malice of Calamity Ganon. They appear identical to the heads of Stalizalfos, though they are engulfed in a dark aura. They will taunt and then relentlessly charge at Link after spawning. They spawn from a certain area of Malice, so destroying the source will prevent more of them from appearing.

Age of Calamity

Lizalfos in Age of Calamity are some of the weakest enemies, first encountered in The Battle of Hyrule Field scenario. They will occasionally drop a Lizalfos Horn or Lizalfos Talon when defeated. After each Lizalfos is defeated, the player will receive a Lizalfos Trophy, which can be used to complete quests or upgrade weapons of the various warriors.

Larger Lizalfos will occasionally appear as the leader of an outpost. They usually deal more damage, have more health, and once defeated, allow the warrior to capture the outpost. Stronger variants and elemental variants of Lizalfos are very common, with their being Blue Lizalfos, Black Lizalfos, Silver Lizalfos, Electric Lizalfos, Fire-Breath Lizalfos, Ice-Breath Lizalfos, and Stalizalfos. The stronger variants appear in later scenarios, with the elemental variants appearing in levels corresponding to their elements.

Tears of the Kingdom

Lizalfos in Tears of the Kingdom return from the previous game with much of their similar qualities, with the marked difference now being that each Lizalfos variant now drops both their own distinct horn and tail upon defeat. Like Breath of the Wild, using a bow is among one of the most reliable strategies to defeat the standard green and blue variants, as one or two shots to their heads will take them out. There are many different types of Lizalfos in Tears of the Kingdom, such as the standard Green Lizalfos, or Fire-Breath Lizalfos; with 8 distinct types, they remain the enemies in the game with the most variations. If meat is dropped on the ground in front of them, they will pick it up and eat it, restoring 100 percent of their health. They retain their speed and ability to swim from the previous game, and all variants have a new attack where they will swing their horns from side to side 4 times or until Link is injured. All Lizalfos variants can be encountered wielding either fused or unfused Lizal Boomerangs, with the fused variant usually fused with crude materials such as rocks and mushrooms. If Link wears the Lizalfos Mask or Majora's Mask in front of a Lizalfos, the Lizalfos will not attack him, but instead investigate him, though if Link hits the Lizalfos while wearing the masks, the Lizalfos will attack. (If it's a pack of Lizalfos, if Link hits one member of the pack, the pack of Lizalfos will start attacking.)

When slain, basic Lizalfos will drop Lizalfos Horns, Lizalfos Talons and Lizalfos Tails.

Blue Lizalfos

A slightly stronger variant of the Green Lizalfos. Often seen wielding reinforced Strengthened Lizal Bows and Reinforced Lizal Shields. Upon death, they drop the katana-like Blue Lizalfos Horn and occasionally Blue Lizalfos Tails.

Black Lizalfos

Even more powerful than the Blue variant, these Lizalfos are usually the leader of their pack. They attack quicker, and carry stronger weapons, including the Steel Lizal Bow and Steel Lizal Shield. Upon death, they drop the serrated-edge Black Lizalfos Horn and occasionally Black Lizalfos Tails.

Fire-Breath Lizalfos

Main article: Fire-Breath Lizalfos

This variant of Lizalfos appears primarily in hot regions of the game, such as on Death Mountain, Gerudo Canyon during the daytime, and areas of the Depths that are corelated to those areas on the surface. They act in a very similar way to regular Lizalfos, but are also able to breathe fire. Link can avoid taking damage here by holding out his shield, or, if he has all three pieces of the Flamebreaker Outfit equipped and enhanced at least twice, the fire will deal no damage at all. Upon death, the Fire-Breath Lizalfos will drop a Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horn, which can be used to fuse together a fire-damage weapon, and occasionally but rarely drop Fire-Breath Lizalfos Tails. They can be instantly killed with weapons fused with an ice-powered horn, or arrows fused with Ice Fruit, White Chuchu Jelly, Ice Keese Wings, Ice Keese Eyeballs or other cold materials.

Ice-Breath Lizalfos

Main article: Ice-Breath Lizalfos

This variant of Lizalfos is often found in the coldest regions of the game, such as Mount Lanayru, the Hebra Mountains, Gerudo Highlands, Gerudo Canyon during the nighttime, and areas of the Depths that are corelated to those areas on the surface. these Lizalfos have the unique ability to spit out many icy balls at will. If these balls come into contact with Link, they will freeze him, and leave him vulnerable to other attacks. Link can avoid taking damage if he has either Zant's Helmet equipped or the full Snowquill Set equipped and upgraded at least twice, in which he will not be frozen. Upon death, they will drop an Ice-Breath Lizalfos Horn, which can be used to fuse together an ice-damage weapon, and occasionally but rarely drop Ice-Breath Lizalfos Tails. They can be instantly killed with weapons fused with an fire-powered horn, or arrows fused with Fire Fruit, Red Chuchu Jelly, Fire Keese Wings, Fire Keese Eyeballs or other fiery materials.

Electric Lizalfos

Main article: Electric Lizalfos

Electric Lizalfos are typically found in the Gerudo Desert, in the Faron-Regional jungles and along the coast of the Faron Sea, where they sometimes lie in wait beneath the sand before jumping out to ambush Link. They can create a dome of electricity at will, which can force Link to drop his metal equipment, unless he is wearing either the Lightning Helm or the full Rubber Set after it has been upgraded at least twice, in which case he will take no damage. Upon death, they will drop Electric Lizalfos Horns, which can be used to fuse together an electric-damage weapon, and occasionally but rarely drop Electric Lizalfos Tails.

Silver Lizalfos

These are the most powerful versions of the Lizalfos in the current game. They are much more aggressive than any other versions, have faster attacking speed, especially with bows, and have significantly more health than weaker variants. Upon death, they will drop Silver Lizalfos Horns, which are sharp enough to cut through both trees and rocks, and occasionally Silver Lizalfos Tails.

Stalizalfos

Main article: Stalizalfos

This variant of Lizalfos only appears at night or in the Depths, and behaves very similarly to creatures such as Stalchildren from previous games. They only have 1 HP, but when struck, their heads will drop to the ground, and will need to be destroyed in order to be fully rid of Stalizalfos. They often appear in groups of 2 or 3. Like other Stal enemies in Tears of the Kingdom, they can be instantly killed if Link shoots or throws a Dazzlefruit anywhere in their range.
