Elements are an attributes system in Hyrule Warriors, and one of the core game mechanics.
Each weapon class in the game has a specific element attached to it, which cannot be overridden. Depending on the element, the weapon can inflict different types of elemental effects and elemental damage.
Elemental Effects
There are five elements in the game: Fire, Water, Lightning, Light, and Darkness. Certain Combo Attacks have an elemental property that will apply the corresponding elemental effect onto enemies you hit. Note that certain Weapon Skills can upgrade these effects.
Elemental Damage
Every warrior and captain in the game has a specific elemental weakness, causing attacks of that element to deal increased damage. Giant Bosses also have their own elemental weakness, causing attacks of that element to break their Weak Point Gauge faster.
Level 4+ weapons, which have two elements, are able to inflict both types of elemental damage. However, only one element can be active at a time, based on the recommended elements for the stage.

Trivia
- Contrary to popular belief, warriors with multiple weapon movesets, such as Link or Lana, do not change elemental weaknesses/resistances based on their current weapon.
- The warrior you are currently playing as will have no elemental weaknesses; they only apply when the character is encountered as a boss.
- Sheik is able to inflict any elemental effect onto enemies using her various Combo Attacks; However, her attacks will always deal Lightning elemental damage, regardless of the current attack being used.
