In A Link to the Past, while the True Master Sword sleeps deep in the Lost Woods, a number of fake Master Swords[1] are scattered elsewhere in the woods to distract those who would steal the real thing.
A Link to the Past
"This is it! The Master Sword! ... ... ... No, this can't be it... Too bad."
When Link comes across a fake Master Sword and picks it up, he realises it is a fake and instantly discards it.
GBA version
"Pull it out, but... too bad! What is it?"
"Fake Master Sword" is the answer to Q. Bumpkin's eighth riddle in his Riddle Quest, and Link must bring one to him in his basket to answer it. However, as they do not regenerate, pulling them all earlier in the game can render the Riddle Quest incompletable. On a similar note, they must be caught directly with the Bug-Catching Net, not pulled by hand.
