Recipes in Breath of the Wild are the result of Link cooking ingredients together to create a meal or an elixir. Cooking is done by holding a selection of up to five ingredients and dropping them into a lit Cooking Pot. Meals are made from proteins, mushrooms, fruits, and vegetables, and elixirs are made by cooking critters with monster parts. While some raw ingredients will restore a portion of a heart or a small number of hearts, cooking meals from those ingredients greatly increases the number of hearts restored. With most recipes, ingredients have their heart-values doubled when included as part of a recipe, though items that heal a half-heart/quarter-heart are always rounded up to one heart. Dubious food and rock-hard food can be eaten but it restores a minimal amount of hearts and does not have any additional properties. | While some raw ingredients will restore a portion of a heart or a small number of hearts, cooking meals from those ingredients greatly increases the number of hearts restored. Cooking meals or elixirs from certain ingredients will also activate effect-imparting items, and effect-imparting ingredients can stack with the same kind for greater effect. Two different effects cannot be active at once, however, meaning only one effect may be active at a time, with the exception of Hearty and other effects. | Cooking meals or elixirs from certain ingredients will also activate effect-imparting items, and effect-imparting ingredients can stack with the same kind for greater effect. The formula for calculating a meal's total heart-value is:
| The formula for calculating a meal's total heart-value is:
| ||

Effect strength is based on a point system. Each effect-imparting item adds to a total, and if the total reaches a certain value, the effect-tier is increased. Tier-3 is the max if the value is more than the first 'threshold' for most effects. As example, Chillshrooms or Staminoka Bass add more points than others, due to being stronger effect modifiers. | Effect strength is based on a point system. Cooking valid recipes has a chance for random bonuses (such as increased hearts or duration boosts), which is approximately a 1:10 chance or 10% chance per cooked recipe. This increases to a 100% chance during a blood moon rising, however before the cutscene so the time window is small; with the exact time being 11:35pm-11:55pm. | Cooking valid recipes has a chance for random bonuses (such as increased hearts or duration boosts), which is approximately a 1:10 chance or 10% chance per cooked recipe. Monster Extract may slightly or drastically improve hearts, effect-tier and/or duration properties of recipes but may also incur no changes or make them worse. This means that a meal using monster extract may see no effect or only duration boosted but may also have all three boost-types applied. A recipe that includes monster extract will never get the possible random chance for a bonus, even if star fragments or dragon parts are included. | |||

Max selling price is assumed from using most profitable possible ingredients as long as they do not effect recipe outcome priority. Recipes that require two different components (such as Steamed Mushrooms) will have effects override recipe properties if both required items are the same effect, such as Hasty. For recipes that require any kind of vegetable + an extra static component that is not edible (i.e., Rock Salt), it is possible to get zero heart-value recipes if herbs that are inedible are used. | Max selling price is assumed from using most profitable possible ingredients as long as they do not effect recipe outcome priority. Open-flame cooked foods are created by dropping raw materials into an open flame, dropping them on the ground on Death Mountain, or by killing an animal which drops raw materials with a fire-based weapon. Frozen/icy foods are created by dropping raw proteins (fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms will not freeze) on the ground in extremely snowy regions or by killing an animal which drops raw materials with an ice-based weapon. | Open-flame cooked foods are created by dropping raw materials into an open flame, dropping them on the ground on Death Mountain, or by killing an animal which drops raw materials with a fire-based weapon. This will be a work of progress, where contributions from the public will be highly appreciated, but this is going to be an attempt to catalog all the food recipes and elixir recipes in one place, with their ingredients and effects. |
Cooking meal ingredients with critters, monster parts, ancient parts, or ore results in dubious food or rock-hard food.
In addition to experimenting with cooking, recipes can be found through a variety of methods. Different individuals will share recipes they know of or request meals be cooked as part of a shrine or side quest. Recipe books and posters are in various locations around Hyrule, most commonly Stables or shops and occasionally in villagers' homes.
Effects
Cooking meals or elixirs from certain ingredients will also activate effect-imparting items, and effect-imparting ingredients can stack with the same kind for greater effect. Two different effects cannot be active at once, however, meaning only one effect may be active at a time, with the exception of Hearty and other effects.
Effects Calculation
- Main article: Cooking in Breath of the Wild#Effect Points
The formula for calculating a meal's total heart-value is:
(ingredient1.HP + ingredient2.HP + ingredient3.HP & etc) × 2 = sum
Effect strength is based on a point system. Each effect-imparting item adds to a total, and if the total reaches a certain value, the effect-tier is increased. Tier-3 is the max if the value is more than the first 'threshold' for most effects. As example, Chillshrooms or Staminoka Bass add more points than others, due to being stronger effect modifiers.

Duration becomes 1:00 (33%) Duration becomes 10:00 (33%) Duration becomes 30:00 (33%) |

Heart-value into 0.25 (25%) No Change (50%) +3 Hearts (25%) |
Recipes
Cooking proteins over an open flame or freezing them will also increase the number of hearts restored.

Elixirs
When cooking elixirs, critters will influence effect-strength while monster parts influence effect-duration. Having 4/5 monster parts will produce the longest-lasted elixirs but with a tradeoff towards effect-strength, however, having 4/5 critters will produce the maximum effect-strength with a generally long duration. The rarest monster parts, such as guts, tails and cores, provide the best duration buffs; while the lowest; horns, tentacles, non-elemental keese wings and non-elemental chuchu jelly provide the most minimum buffs for duration.
Adding an Acorn, Apple or Chickaloo Tree Nut to an elixir will add minor healing properties and minor duration boosts that the elixir would not otherwise have. However, acorns or tree-nuts are considered worse than even the lowest-tier effect modifiers. Fairies can be cooked into a tonic which restores hearts, the amount determined by the number of fairies used and do not require additional ingredients besides at least one fairy.
Like recipes and bonus hearts, produced elixirs may randomly end up with bonus effects to potency or duration. Dragon parts will also provide the same expected bonuses for duration, with the rare dragon horns providing the highest at a 30-minute buff increase. Some elixir times may appear to be skewed in terms of effect vs duration but they tend to even out with high-tier monster parts as the bulk. Given certain kinds of guts/etc are the same tier, if one prefers to spread resources or be efficient, it is recommended to use the most plentiful tier-3 monster parts available, typically Bokoblin Guts or Keese Eyeballs.

Open-flame Cooked & Frozen
Open-flame cooked foods are created by dropping raw materials into an open flame, dropping them on the ground on Death Mountain, or by killing an animal which drops raw materials with a fire-based weapon. Frozen/icy foods are created by dropping raw proteins (fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms will not freeze) on the ground in extremely snowy regions or by killing an animal which drops raw materials with an ice-based weapon.
