Hammers are recurring items in The Legend of Zelda series. They vary in size, name, and design, but they all serve Link the same purpose: smashing objects. Every variation has its limitations, and thus must be used accordingly.

The Adventure of Link

Hammer-Sprite-AoL.png

In The Adventure of Link, the Hammer is used to destroy boulders and forests.[1] Link can acquire it within a cave in the deepest part of Death Mountain.

A Link to the Past

Main article: Magic Hammer

In A Link to the Past, the Hammer is called the Magic Hammer. Contrary to its name, it does not cost any magic power to use. This weapon is used to flatten fence posts and "moles" to advance further in the game, to get through enemy shells or flip them, or to solve puzzles. It is found in the first dungeon of the Dark World, the Dark Palace.

Ocarina of Time

Main article: Megaton Hammer

In Ocarina of Time, the Hammer is known as the Megaton Hammer. It is useful against Torch Slugs because it flips them over to their weak point. It is also used on rusty switches that cannot be pressed otherwise. It can also smash up red boulders that bombs cannot, most of these boulders are located around Death Mountain. It is the dungeon item of the Fire Temple, the second Adult Link temple.

The Wind Waker

Main article: Skull Hammer

In The Wind Waker, the Hammer is known as the Skull Hammer. It is acquired at the Forsaken Fortress the second time Link visits it. It can be used to smash up spiked or wooden pegs and it also serves as a powerful weapon against enemies.

Four Swords Adventures

Main article: Magic Hammer

In Four Swords Adventures, the Hammer is known as the Magic Hammer. It is a basic hammer that can be used to flip switches, and defeat certain enemies. It can be upgraded to the Level 2 Magic Hammer, which is a more powerful variation.

Phantom Hourglass

In Phantom Hourglass, Link gets an item simply called the Hammer. It is useful against enemies that Link was unable to defeat without it. It is found on the third floor of Mutoh's Temple, and it is required to defeat the boss, Eox.

A Link Between Worlds

"You rented the hammer. It's as heavy as it looks, so it should really pack a punch!"

— In-game description

In A Link Between Worlds, the Hammer can be primarily used to smash down various objects. It can be acquired from Ravio at his shop. When upgraded, it becomes stronger and gets an added shockwave effect.

Non-Canon Appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

Hyrule Warriors

Main article: Hammer (Hyrule Warriors)

The Hammer makes an appearance in the Zelda and Dynasty Warriors crossover, Hyrule Warriors. It is the only weapon of Darunia, and has three forms: Hammer, Igneous Hammer, and Megaton Hammer. The latter two are found by completing certain challenges in Adventure Mode, while the first one is acquired when Darunia is unlocked after completing Death Mountain's Land of Myth scenario in Legend Mode.

In Hyrule Warriors Legends and Definitive Edition, the Hammer is also an item that can defeat ChuChus and activate Hammer Switches. It is obtained in A New Disturbance, which unlocks after completing the main story, Cia's Tale, and Linkle's Tale.

Cadence of Hyrule

Main article: Megaton Hammer

In Cadence of Hyrule, the Hammer, once again appearing as the Megaton Hammer, is an item added in the Symphony of the Mask expansion. It is a powerful item that can flatten enemies, destructibles (i.e. bushes or pots), or bombable/diggable walls, at the cost of Stamina. On the Inventory screen, it occupies the slot where the first Bottle goes in the base game.
