Deku Sticks are common items that appear in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. They are long sticks taken from the Great Deku Tree and are mostly used for lighting torches and burning spiderwebs, as they catch fire when put up against a lit torch.OoT{{Ref|Ocarina of Time 3D|A long stick taken from the Deku Tree. They can be saved by putting them away before they burn out. The Deku Stick's second use is the same as the swords; they can kill enemies. They are more powerful than the sword, but unlike that item, they break. Usually after one hit, or if hit against a wall they will break instantly. They may be found in shops, pots, or after killing a Deku Baba.

Deku Sticks are items from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

Ocarina of Time

"You got a Deku Stick! On the Select Item Subscreen, you can set it to (C◀), (C▼), or (C▶). Set it to Ⓒ and swing it with Ⓒ! When you want to put it away, stand still and press Ⓐ. You can carry up to 10 sticks, but don't waste them."

In Ocarina of Time, Deku Sticks are long, wooden poles, with three stubby branches and a single, green leaf hanging from the top stub. Link can purchase them from the Kokiri Shop or the Bazaar for 10 Rupees each, from Business Scrubs for 15 Rupees each, or find them inside jars. Deku Sticks are also dropped by Deku Babas if Link defeats them by cutting their stalk. The Deku Sticks sold by the Kokiri Shop claim to be loose branches gathered from the Great Deku Tree.[1]

Deku Sticks can only be used by Young Link. While holding one, Link can light the tip of a Deku Stick using a lit torch, enabling him to burn webs and light unlit torches; if lit for too long, the Deku Stick will break and be consumed, though Link can put the Deku Stick away to save it. Alternatively, Deku Sticks can be used as weapons; they deal double damage compared to the Kokiri Sword, but break after one hit.

Initially, Link can carry up to 10 Deku Sticks; however, there are two upgrades that increase his capacity by +10 each, to a max of 30. Both upgrades are located in the child era, and can be found here.

Majora's Mask

"You got a Deku Stick! Set it to (C◀), (C▼), or (C▶) on the Select Item Screen. Deku Sticks burn well. Pull one out with Ⓒ and press Ⓒ to swing it. You can carry only 10, so use them wisely."

— N/A, Majora's Mask

In Majora's Mask, Link can purchase Deku Sticks from the Trading Post for 10 Rupees each, find them inside jars, or obtain them from Deku Babas.[2] They function identically to their previous appearance, only Link cannot upgrade his Deku Stick capacity. Holding a lit Deku Stick in the Stone Tower Temple will attract Moths.

Non-Canon Appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors, Deku Sticks appear as an Item Card on the Termina Map. They can be used to light torches, revealing hidden enemies.

Nomenclature

The Japanese name for the Deku Stick, デクの棒 (Deku no Bou), is derived from the Japanese idiom 木偶の坊 (Deku no Bou). Both phrases have the same pronunciation, but have different spellings and meanings; the latter spelling, 木偶の坊, means "the wooden puppet", a metaphor for an incompetent person. This is referenced in Majora's Mask, where Zubora calls Gabora a "Deku Stick" for suggesting they melt the ice around their hearth with Hot Spring Water.

Trivia

 • If a Butterfly lands on a Deku Stick, it will transform into a Fairy.
 • Alongside the Giant's Knife, Deku Sticks are the first items in the series that can break after extended use.
 • The design of the Deku Spear in Hyrule Warriors is based on a Deku Stick.
