The Magic Container only appears in The Adventure of Link. It expands Link's Magic Meter by one rectangle. There are four of them throughout Hyrule.
1. Just southwest of the North Palace in a cave. Obtaining the Candle in Parapa Palace makes battling the monsters within more manageable.
2. Right by Spectacle Rock, just use the Hammer to break the rock directly to the west of the cave where you get the Hammer.
3. On the west side of Maze Island in an invisible hole.
4. Once Link has the first three containers he should talk to a woman in a blue dress in the Hidden Town of Kasuto. Only when he has the first three containers will the woman allow him inside to acquire the final Magic Container.
Failing to collect the Magic Containers not only makes Link's quest more difficult, but eventually impossible. Starting with the Fire Spell and extending to each subsequent spell, Link will not be allowed to learn the magic taught by the Wise Men of Eastern Hyrule without the requisite number of magic containers.
