Null is the primary antagonist and final boss of Echoes of Wisdom.

Echoes of Wisdom

According to the Golden Goddesses, they created the Light World of Hyrule to imprison Null, who existed in the void of nothingness which existed before, and devoured anything which threatened to take hold in the void. After using the world to contain it, it began to create rifts in an attempt to destroy it, after which they in turn made the Tris to repair the rifts and keep it sealed.[1]

This continued until Null found a way to imprison all but one of the Tris, allowing rifts to grow, and also use their own echo power to create monsters to help it in its quest to destroy the world. The last remaining Tri encountered Zelda as she escaped the Suthorn Ruins. After she was imprisoned by Null's echoes impersonating the king of Hyrule, Minister Lefte and General Wright, this Tri helped her to escape, and the two joined forces to begin rescuing Tri's Friends from the Still World and mending Null's rifts. After they defeated its Ganon echo and fixed the Stilled Hyrule Castle Town rift, Null attempted to attack them directly as they returned to the Light World. However, Link - who had previously fallen into the rift in the Suthorn Ruins - attacked it in turn. While Link was captured, Zelda and Tri made it safely out.

Following this, Null created new rifts in the Lands of the Goddesses, apparently devised a plan to wait until Zelda and Tri mended these rifts and obtained Din's, Nayru's and Farore's Sanctions; which would open the path to the "Prime Energy". As soon as they did so, it enveloped Zelda in a dark cloud, and created a "perfect echo" of her - including the sanctions. While Tri warped the unconscious Zelda away before further harm could come to her, the echo under Null's control travelled to the Eternal Forest and even fooled General Wright and the Great Deku Tree into thinking it was the real princess. In the Ancient Ruins under the forest, the real Zelda found her echo just as it reached the Prime Energy, known in other time periods as the Triforce. As another Zelda explained to her Link years earlier, however, only one whose desire for power, wisdom and courage could obtain the whole Triforce just by touching it.[2] As such, when the Zelda echo touched it, it gained only the Triforce of Power, with the real Zelda receiving the Triforce of Wisdom, while the Triforce of Courage created and flew through a portal to the Stilled Ancient Ruins and the imprisoned Link. Null's echo of Zelda then followed this.

When the real Zelda caught up with Null's echo of her, it was verifying that the captive Link indeed had the third piece of Prime Energy. Zelda then confronted and beat her echo, who fled into Null's true, huge, body. Zelda then freed Link, and the two followed until they found Null's core. It took the Prime Energy from its Zelda echo, and used it to create massive rifts across Hyrule. Unable to fully destroy the world without the full Triforce, the core took the form of a huge, purple Tri, and used the powers of its captive Tris to attack them. After defeating it, Zelda, Link and Tri used bind to pull the Triforce of Power from its being, and wished upon the reunited Prime Energy for Null's destruction. The freed Tris then repaired Null's rifts one final time, before returning to the goddesses, with their job done.

  1. "Priestess, I will tell you of the one who has torn this land asunder with the rifts.
Before the creation of the skies and the lands, there was a void—a vast nothingness.
In the void, some things would begin taking form, only to be devoured by the one who dwelt there.
The name of this one is Null.
Null desired the world in its entirety and consumed all life indiscriminately.
We three goddesses could not abide this and created the skies and the lands to contain Null.
All the while, Null continued creating rifts, working ceaselessly to return the world to a void.
And so we brought forth the Tris to dissipate the rifts, thus keeping the balance.

  2. "If you would seek the sacred triangle, listen well... The resting place of the sacred triangle, the Sacred Realm, is a mirror that reflects what is in the heart... the heart of one who enters it... If an evil heart, the Realm will become full of evil; if pure, the Realm will become a paradise. The Triforce...the sacred triangle... it is a balance that weighs the three forces: Power, Wisdom and Courage. If the heart of the one who holds the sacred triangle has all three forces in balance, that one will gain the True Force to govern all. But, if that one's heart is not in balance, the Triforce will separate into three parts: Power, Wisdom and Courage. Only one part will remain for the one who touched the Triforce...the part representing the force that one most believes in. If that one seeks the True Force, that one must acquire the two lost parts. Those two parts will be held within others chosen by destiny, who will bear the Triforce mark on the backs of their hands." — Sheik, Ocarina of Time.
