Dinraal is one of three dragons found in Breath of the Wild and one of four dragons found in Tears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild

"A spirit of fire has taken the form of this giant dragon. Making its home in the Eldin region, it's said to have served the Spring of Power since ancient times. An old saying goes, "The dragon ascends to the heavens as the sun begins to set." but nobody has witnessed this in the current age. The flames that coat its body make it dangerous to get near, but Dinraal bears no ill will toward people."

Breath of the Wild Hyrule Compendium

Mechanics

Dinraal will not start spawning in the world until the Seek Out Impa Main Quest has been completed or Link has freed the four Divine Beasts. Once one of these tasks is completed, Dinraal will always spawn whenever the following conditions are met:

  • It is between the hours of 7 PM and 7 AM.
  • Link is in one of the regions of its flight path.
  • Dinraal hasn't already spawned that day.

Dinraal will always spawn on its flight path a long distance away from Link and will leave after flying for 5 hours if it hasn't reached the end of its course. It will also leave immediately if Link attacks it.

Dinraal's flight path begins in the skies high above the Spring of Power, descends into shooting range around the Eldin Great Skeleton, proceeds west along the Deplian Badlands, passes over the Forgotten Temple, descends back into shooting range in Tanagar Canyon near Salari Plain, and then follows the canyon to its end before returning to the sky.

Dinraal can only spawn once a day but since a new day starts at midnight, it is possible to make it spawn twice in one night.

Drops and Uses

Dinraal can drop four items, including Dinraal's Scale, Dinraal's Claw, Shard of Dinraal's Fang, and Shard of Dinraal's Horn. Dinraal will always drop a Scale on the first encounter with Link regardless of where Link shoots it with an arrow.

Shrine Quests

Dinraal is involved in The Spring of Power shrine quest in order to uncover Tutsuwa Nima Shrine, south of the North Akkala Valley. Link must procure a scale to drop in the Spring of Power, which will open the door to the shrine.

Dinraal is also involved in the DLC-exclusive Shira Gomar Shrine at the Tanagar Canyon, where Link must shoot at its horns when they glow blue to uncover the shrine. The shard serves no purpose towards uncovering the shrine, as the point itself is shooting at the horns.

Farming

Dinraal always spawns a fair distance from your current location along its flight path which can make it easy to miss and forces you to wait for it to come within range. The most efficient farming spot is one where Dinraal spawns at a low altitude and you can go out to meet it instead of waiting for it to pass by you.

This method ideally requires that you have a horse registered, as running towards Dinraal on foot may take more time.

Warp to Shae Loya Shrine and rest until morning at Tabantha Bridge Stable. The Cooking Pot there never goes out even in rain and it's a good spot to place the Travel Medallion if you have it. Then, ride on your horse straight north alongside the canyon and you should see Dinraal coming around the bend in the canyon. Glide out to shoot him. This is the fastest farming spot for Dinraal.

You can recover your horse every time by talking to the attendant at the stable, or if you have the Ancient Saddle equipped on your horse, you can summon it at your side to ride again.

Note that Dinraal may not spawn if you're too close to a campfire or Travel Medallion. This shouldn't be an issue with the above method since you're not waiting for it to pass by.

Be careful of Dinraal's fiery aura because if you paraglide too close it may knock you out of the sky.

Other Methods

These methods have been previously used and have been shown as common methods in online guides and tutorials, though they are more time-consuming and/or less reliable.

Method 1

Using Maag No'rah Shrine as a travel gate, you can camp inside the cavern until the night and then paraglide closer to the canyon. Dinraal will appear in the night sky to the west at 12:00 AM, but won't arrive next to you until ~1:30 AM. You can then jump and then get close to the dragon to shoot whatever parts you need out of it.

  • Pros:
    • Cavern provides good way to camp;
    • Has a good vantage point and gets you extremely close to Dinraal;
    • Dinraal will unequivocally appear in the night sky regardless of weather.
    • Drop location for the dragon parts is very consistent;
    • No need for the Travel Medallion, as the shrine provides the travel gate.
  • Cons:
    • Long wait;
    • Area has markedly bad weather with frequent thunderstorms;
    • Since method requires a long night wait, Stalkoblins may appear;
    • Camping at cavern consumes resources (Wood, fire starting weapons or Flint), as fireplace de-spawns due to distance.
Method 2

Make your way towards the Eldin Great Skeleton from Gorae Torr Shrine and head to the mountain's small rock outcrop to its west. Create a fireplace and place your Travel Medallion close to it, and camp until the morning or the night. Dinraal may appear on the western sky at ~8:00 AM, or ~9:00 PM if done at night. You can then jump from the outcrop and towards Dinraal.

  • Pros:
    • Gets you extremely close to Dinraal, directly at your front;
    • Dragon parts fall in a relatively small area.
  • Cons:
    • Long wait;
    • Requires fire starting resources, though the fireplace is less likely to de-spawn;
    • Difficult to reach, so it requires the Travel Medallion;
    • Extremely inconsistent, as Dinraal may not spawn at all very frequently;
    • There's a Lynel right next to the rock outcrop further west, and dragon parts may drop right next to it, putting you in extreme hazard. It may require slaying the Lynel before attempting to farm dragon parts, or wear the Majora's Mask to prevent the Lynel from attacking.

"A spirit of fire has taken the form of this giant dragon. Making its home in the Eldin region, it's said to have served the Spring of Power since ancient times. The flames that coat its body can make the surrounding area blazing hot, but Dinraal bears no ill will toward people. Few have seen it in the current age."

Tears of the Kingdom Hyrule Compendium

While the Hyrule Compendium description of Dinraal continues to refer to the dragon as "It", when beginning the Goddess Statue of Power quest, the Goddess Statue in the Spring of Power refers to Dinraal with feminine pronouns.[1]

Drops and Uses

Link can hit Dinraal once every 10 minutes with any weapon or arrow to cause it to drop a materials. It can drop four materials this way, depending on where Link hits it.

Meanwhile, Shards of Dinraal's Spike can be picked up by running along the dragon's back, as they spawn under the dragon's spikes. To do so safely requires the Flamebreaker Set's Set Bonus, Fireproof.

Route

Dinraal flies out of the Depths to the Surface through the East Akkala Plains Chasm, and travels along the north-east and northern coasts - briefly rising to the Sky heights above Skull Lake - before diving into the Drenan Highlands Chasm.

In the Depths, Dinraal flies a very similar path in the opposite direction.
