The King of Red Lions is a talking boat that Link befriends on the Great Sea in The Wind Waker.
The Wind Waker
Link uses the King of Red Lions to travel the Great Sea, and the King gives advice to Link while on their travels. Link receives the Wind Waker from this boat after arriving at Dragon Roost Island. He is first met after Link attempts to tackle the Forsaken Fortress, and rescues him after he is flung from the tower by the Helmaroc King. After being tossed out to the Great Sea, the King of Red Lions finds him and takes him to shore on Windfall Island.[1]
After the unconscious Link wakes up, the King of Red Lions introduces himself to Link and says that he is the only boat who can speak the words of men.[2] He also says he has been watching Link since he went to the Forsaken Fortress to save Aryll and that such a bold attempt was foolhardy.[3] He then speaks about Ganon,[4] the very same Ganon the ancient legends speak of, who was sealed away and has returned to enshroud the world in evil.[5][6][7]
The King of Red Lions says that he shall guide Link as they go forward,[8][9][10] but says that although he is indeed a boat, he does not possess a Sail,[11] and tells Link to find one at the island so that they can travel across the Great Sea.[12] After Link receives the Grappling Hook, he can attach it on the boat as a salvage arm, which is used to find treasures at the bottom of the ocean. The King of Red Lions also has a bomb cannon, which is used to shoot Bombs. In The Wind Waker HD, Link can find the Swift Sail, which allows Link to travel even faster with the King of Red Lions.
Later in the quest, it is revealed that the King of Red Lions is actually the King of Hyrule, named Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule.

- ↑ "Did I startle you? I suppose that is only natural. As wide as the world is, I am the only boat upon it who can speak the words of men. I am the King of Red Lions. Do not fear... I am not your enemy." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
- ↑ "[Link]... I have been watching you since you went to the Forsaken Fortress to rescue your sister. I understand how your desire to protect your sister could give you the courage to fearlessly stand up to anything... But such a bold attempt was foolhardy! I suppose you saw him... The shadow that commands that monstrous bird..." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
- ↑ "His name is...Ganon..." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
- ↑ "...He who obtained the power of the gods, attempted to cover the land in darkness, and was ultimately sealed away by the very power he hoped to command." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.

- ↑ "...I see. In that case, I shall guide you as we go forward...advising you on what you should do, and where you must go. Ganon cannot be defeated by human hands, let alone by what little strength you possess." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
- ↑ "The key to defeating Ganon is locked away in a great power that you can wield only after much toil and hardship. Do you understand?" — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
- ↑ "In that case, we depart! To the Great Sea! ...Ah, but I am getting ahead of myself." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
- ↑ "This is actually a bit embarrassing for me to admit, but...although I am indeed a boat that possesses the power of speech... I possess no sail. And a boat with no sail can sail no seas." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
- ↑ "I have brought you far to the east of the dark gaze of the Forsaken Fortress. On this island is a town of merchants who deal in a wide variety of goods. If you search hard enough, surely you can find one who will sell you a sail. I am sorry to ask this of you, but without a sail, I will be useless to you." — King of Red Lions, The Wind Waker.
