Deku Sticks are items from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. They can only be used by Young Link in the former game.
Ocarina of Time
Deku Sticks are long, wooden poles, with a few short branches and a single leaf. The shopkeeper of the Kokiri Shop claims that Deku Sticks are gathered from the Great Deku Tree[1], but they can also be obtained from Deku Babas, Big Deku Babas, and Withered Deku Babas - if Link stuns them, he can cut them while they remain upright to obtain Deku Sticks from their remains. Additionally, Deku Sticks are also found inside of Pots, or they can be bought from shops for 10 Rupees or Business Scrubs for 15 Rupees.
Deku Sticks are used as basic fire-starters. Link can light a Deku Stick on fire using a lit torch, which will then light unlit torches and burn spider webs. They will burn out and break after burning for a short time, although Link can put the Deku Stick away to save it. Additionally, Deku Sticks can be used as weapons - they deal double damage compared to the Kokiri Sword, but will break after one hit.
Link can carry up to 10 Deku Sticks at the beginning of the game, but he can upgrade the capacity to 20, and then to 30, via the following upgrades:
- A Business Scrub under the bridge connecting Kokiri Forest to Hyrule Field will sell Link an upgrade for 40 Rupees.
- If Link enters the Forest Stage while wearing the Skull Mask and then talks to the Forest Stage Leader, he will remark that Link resembles their totem, and rewards him with an upgrade.
Majora's Mask
Deku Sticks return in Majora's Mask, with the same properties as in Ocarina of Time - however, if Link carries a lit Deku Stick in the Stone Tower Temple, he will be attacked by Moths. Link can purchase Deku Sticks from the Trading Post for 10 Rupees, or he can obtain them from Withered Deku Babas.[2]. Link can carry up to 10 Deku Sticks, although the capacity cannot be upgraded.
