The sword is Link's primary weapon in the Legend of Zelda series. The sword is one of the first weapons Link obtains, the other being the Shield. The Sword is also the most crucial weapon Link obtains, as it is adequate in defeating most foes he encounters. The sword is also used to break open pots, trigger switches, and slash grass. In certain The Legend of Zelda games, the sword can be used to detect whether a wall can be destroyed with a Bomb through the hollow clang sound it makes when hitting a suspicious wall. Link holds the sword in his left hand in most titles, but he uses his right hand in the Wii version of Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Swords such as the Giant's Knife, Biggoron's Sword, and the Great Fairy's Sword require both hands to hold. Link acquires many different swords along his quests, and he can also learn various sword techniques and skills.
Types of Swords
Basic Swords
Usually the first sword Link obtains. Examples of basic Swords are the Recruit's Sword, Oshus's Sword, Ordon Sword, Wooden Sword, Smith's Sword, Hero's Sword, Kokiri Sword, Practice Sword, and Fighter's Sword.
Legendary Swords
Link often needs a sword stronger than a Basic Sword to defeat tougher bosses or the final boss. Some examples of Legendary Swords are the Lokomo Sword, Phantom Sword, Master Sword, and Four Sword.
Optional Swords
Optional swords include the Giant's Knife, the Biggoron's Sword, and the Great Fairy's Sword.
Appearances in games
The Legend of Zelda
There are three swords acquirable in The Legend of Zelda, two of them being available before the first dungeon. Link can fire beams out of the tip of his sword if his heart gauge is full.
Wooden Sword
- Main article: Wooden Sword
At the start screen you can find an old man in a cave who will give you the Wooden Sword. It is the weakest sword in the game, but it gets the job done against simpler enemies.
White Sword
- Main article: White Sword
Once Link has six hearts, can get the White Sword to replace the Wooden Sword. The White Sword does twice as much damage as the Wooden Sword. It is possible to get this blade before the first Dungeon.
Magical Sword
- Main article: Magical Sword
The Magical Sword is the final sword in the game. It does 3x as much as the wooden sword, and requires 12 hearts to obtain. It is possible to finish the game with just the Wooden Sword, but getting the Magical Sword makes it much simpler.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
You have only one sword in The Adventure of Link, but it can be upgraded via the level up system. The level eight sword is the most powerful.
A Link to the Past
You can have four swords in A Link to the Past, though two of them are upgrades.
Fighter's Sword
- Main article: Fighter's Sword
You get the Fighter's Sword fairly early on in the game. When you first arrive in Hyrule Castle, your uncle will give it to you along with the shield, before his passing. It is fairly weak, and does minimal damage against enemies, but it gets the job done.
Master Sword
- Main article: Master Sword
After collecting the three Pendants (The Pendant of Courage, the Pendant of Power and the Pendant of Wisdom) you earn the right to wield the legendary Master Sword. This legendary blade has twice the power of the Fighter's Sword. It can be upgraded into two more powerful weapons.
Tempered Sword
- Main article: Tempered Sword
The Tempered Sword is an upgrade from the Master Sword. After turning the frog back into a human and reuniting him with his friend, they will temper with your sword (hence the name) increasing the power to three times that of the Fighter's Sword.
Golden Sword
- Main article: Golden Sword
After purchasing a Super Bomb from the Bomb Shop in the Dark World, you can blow up an area in the Pyramid of Power only accessible via this bomb. Inside, you can throw in your Master or Tempered Sword to receive the final Sword upgrade, the Golden Sword. This blade has twice the power of the Master Sword, or four times the power of the Fighter's Sword, and makes the battle against Ganon much easier!
Link's Awakening
In Link's Awakening, you obtain the Sword right after you awaken. It is the only required sword in the game, but it can be upgraded to the Level 2 Sword.
Seashell Sword
- Main article: Seashell Sword
Once you obtain 20 Secret Seashells, you can go to the Seashell Mansion and get the Level 2 Sword. This sword does more damage than the standard sword and can shoot Sword Beams.
Ocarina of Time
There are technically 4 swords you can acquire in Ocarina of Time; however, one of them is very fragile, so it breaks.
Kokiri Sword
- Main article: Kokiri Sword
You get the Kokiri Sword very early on in the game and keep it throughout Link's entire childhood. It is very weak, and only does minimal damage to enemies. It is the only sword usable as Young Link, and cannot be used by Adult Link.
Master Sword
- Main article: Master Sword
After acquiring the 3 Spiritual Stones, Zelda will throw the Ocarina of Time while fleeing from Ganondorf. This instrument can be used to open the Door of Time located in the Temple of Time where the Master Sword rests. When Link pulls it out of the pedestal, he goes through a seven year sleep, thus becoming an adult since he was too young to be the Hero of Time. The Master Sword does twice the damage of the Kokiri Sword, and is only wieldable by Adult Link. Should Link choose to insert the sword back into the Pedestal, he will return to 7 years in the past.
The Master Sword is the only weapon that can finish Ganondorf
Giant's Knife
- Main article: Giant's Knife
The Giant's Knife is an extremely powerful blade that is so long, it requires two hands to wield. It is only acquirable as Adult Link. If you blow up the walls on the third? tier of Goron City, you will eventually find Medigoron who will sell you this knife for 200 Rupees. If you swing it at a wall enough, it will eventually break, at which time you can buy another one for the same price, which will also break.
Biggoron's Sword
- Main article: Biggoron's Sword
The Biggoron's Sword is the last sword Link can receive during his journey to save Hyrule. It is tied with the Giant's Knife, see above, power wise, but will not break. It is the best sword in the game. The catch is, like the Giant's Knife, it requires two hands to carry. This means that Link cannot defend with his Shield while wielding this sword. It is given to you by Biggoron after finishing a long Trading Sequence. It is a rather lengthy sidequest, but it is well worth it as the Biggoron's Sword does double the damage of the Master Sword.
Majora's Mask
There are four swords obtainable in Majora's Mask: Your standard 'starting off' sword, and two upgrades. The fourth sword is an equipable item.
Kokiri Sword
- Main article: Kokiri Sword
You begin your journey through Termina with your old Kokiri Sword. This is the weakest sword in the game, and the only one that it is required. However, it is highly recommended that you upgrade it. It has two upgrades, and they are as follow: The Razor Sword, and the Gilded Sword.
Razor Sword
- Main article: Razor Sword
After beating Goht, you can bring your Kokiri sword into the Mountain Smithy located in the Mountain Village. If you pay him 100 rupees, he will sharpen it, upgrading it to the Razor Sword. This sword does double the damage of the Kokiri Sword, but it will break and return to the original after 100 swings. You can get it re-upgraded as many times as you want, but it will just keep breaking.
Gilded Sword
- Main article: Gilded Sword
If you have enough time left in the current three day cycle, you can go to Biggoron for a Powder Keg lesson. Take the Powder Keg he gives you, and carry it all the way to the entrance to the Mountain Village, but take a sharp right before entering the Village. Blow up the boulders at the top and compete in the Goron Races. Note: This is only available if it is spring. After winning, you will be given some Gold Dust. Give this Gold Dust to the smithy, who will upgrade your Razor Sword into a Gilded Sword. It will not work if you still have the Kokiri Sword. The Gilded Sword does three times the damage of the Kokiri Sword, and will not break.
Great Fairy's Sword
- Main article: Great Fairy's Sword
The Great Fairy's Sword is the most powerful sword in the game, doing four times the damage of the Kokiri Sword. The catch is that it's an equipable item, meaning you can not use your shield while handling it. This blade is given to you by the Great Fairy after rescuing all of the Stone Tower Temple Stray Fairies.

It does not possess the full power to banquish evil anymore, and must be restored to its original state. Restoring it doesn't actually increase it's power, but it does enable you to hurt Ganondorf. To restore it, you need to receive a prayer from the two sages that watch over the Earth and Wind Temples (Medli and Makar). Only then can you use it to finish off Ganondorf by stabbing it through his head.
