This tool consists of a claw connected by a long chain that can launch and pull Link towards something farther away, or pull a lighter object towards him. The item could be considered an advanced version of the Hookshot, which has appeared in numerous other games. The reason for creating a new object with the same purpose is unknown.
Twilight Princess
The Clawshot makes its first appearance in Twilight Princess. It is found in the third dungeon of the game, the Lakebed Temple. In order to collect it, Link must defeat the Mini-Boss of the dungeon, the Deku Toad.

Unlike the Hookshot, the Clawshot does not allow Link to grapple onto treasure chests. It can attatch to a number of surfaces, such as vines, metal gratings, and specific grappling spots. What makes the Clawshot unique is that it can be used underwater, unlike a variety of other items. It functions primarily the same as the Hookshot, except it has the ability to raise and lower Link after being deployed.
The Clawshot is mainly used in Twilight Princess to grapple onto targets, steel grates, and vines. Most areas in the game have one or more of these targets. It is also used to stun enemies and retrieve objects that are far away. Since it is a chain that is propelled, the Clawshot cannot be stopped by wind. This characteristic is used in the City in the Sky, where Link has to activate a switch using the Clawshot, because the Hero's Bow cannot shoot through the wind that blows away from the switch. The Clawshot is one of the most used items in the entire game.

The Clawshot is obtained in the Lakebed Temple after defeating the Deku Toad. The second Clawshot, forming the Double Clawshots, is obtained in the City in the Sky. The Clawshot can be used to complete the first stage of the STAR Game in Hyrule Castle Town. It is necessary to have the Double Clawshots in order to complete the second stage of the game.
There is a second Clawshot that can be found in Twilight Princess that combines with the first to create the Double Clawshots. Thios second Clawshot is obtained in City in the Sky after defeating the mini-boss, an Aeralfos. With this second Clawshot, Link can now shoot one while using the other to hold onto a target. This makes for some easy transporting through areas with lots of Clawshot targets. Additionally, there is a Piece of Heart found in the Kakariko Gorge that can only be collected using the Double CLawshots.

In the City in the Sky you get an upgrade to the Clawshot, the double Clawshots. This allows you Clawshot over to a target and then from that target Clawshot to the next one.
The Clawshot is also used in the STAR Game Mini-Game. In this game, Link can use the Clawshot to travel around the caged areas in order to collect shiny orbs. If he succesfully collects all the orbs within the time limit, he wins a quiver upgrade.

The Clawshot makes in second appearance in Skyward Sword. Here, the Clawshot is obtained after completing the Lanayru Desert Silent Realm. However, Link does no collect one Clawshot at this time: he collects both, immediately having the Double Clawshots.
The Clawshots have primarily the same use as they did in Twilight Princess. Link will obtain the Clawshots once he passes the Lanayru Silent Realm trial. Unlike in Twilight Princess, Link obtains the Clawshots as a pair automatically. The Double Clawshots are mainly used to explore the Lanayru Sand Sea.

The Double Clawshots are mainly used to explore the Lanayru Sand Sea, as there are Clawshot targets all over the area. However, it is not used much anywhere else, making it a lot less useful than its Twilight Princess counterparts.
