Crates are objects that have appeared in many The Legend of Zelda games.
Crates are very common in Zelda games, and appear in dungeons and homes. They are used in many block sliding puzzles, and can be climbed on to reach a higher ledge. Some crates are breakable and drop various items like Arrows, Recovery Hearts, Rupees, Bombs, etc.

Ocarina of Time
Crates are in market square, Kakariko Village, Hyrule Castle, Lon Lon Ranch, and Gerudo's Fortress. As a child, Link helps the Cucco Lady by finding her cuccos. One is inside a crate in the village. In Gerudo's Fortress, Link can sneak through the fortress by hiding behind crates. Hyrule Castle, Link moves the crates to sneak in the hole. Lon Lon Ranch, in the building, when Link moves the crates around, there is a hole where on the other side, there is a Piece of Heart. The crates in the Market square contain various consumable items.

Objects
Boxes and crates are found in some Zelda games, including Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. They are related to jars, as Link can smash both to get small goodies.

Locations and Uses
Boxes and crates are not found in remotely every building as are jars, but they are found in some buildings and homes. Link can cut, smash, or break boxes and crates to get small, random goodies such as Rupees, Recovery Hearts, bombs, and arrows.

Appearances
Boxes and crates look very similar, if not the same, in every Zelda game. They are brown or tan, cube-shaped, and have some sort of marking on them -- usually a 'X' shape or a cross.
