Master Kohga is the comical leader of the Yiga Clan, a militant faction of Sheikah whom swore allegiance to Ganon and is enemy of the Royal Family of Hyrule. A servant of Ganon, he is responsible for tasking his clansmen to kill both Link and undermining the rule of the Royal Family. He serves as an antagonist in Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and is a major antagonist in Age of Calamity.

Characteristics

Kohga is described as a leader preferring to making his underlings do all the work while he spends time either loafing around or napping. However, he is also proven to be charismatic whose grandiose inspires deep passionate loyalty among his men.[1] Conversely, Kohga is ultimately passionate and loyal towards his own men (especially Sooga), willing to even give up his pride and work alongside enemies to punish those who betrayed him and his clan.[2]

Despite his comical and child-like personality, Kohga is considered a master of "esoteric arts" utilized by Sheikah and the Yiga whose prowess surpasses ordinary members of the clan and displays abilities associated with Sheikah Monks. He is capable of preforming a wide variety of techniques, including teleportation, creating shield barriers, flight, and conjuring large spiked bombs.[3]. Kohga is also aware of a secret technique that allows him to acquire the same powers possessed by ancient energy sources due to being the leader of the Yiga Clan.[4] In a parallel timeline, it is shown that Kohga in his prime was capable of performing more advanced versions of the Earthwake Technique, disguising himself as both Hylians and Gerudo, and the Big Glowy Blast, the latter technique typically associated with high-ranking Sheikah Monks such as Maz Koshia.[2]

Kohga also possess a surprisingly high intellect, having affinity for technology similar to his Sheikah ancestors which made him capable of producing his own construct based upon Mineru's designs and one of the few Yiga able to see through Link's disguise should he approach him in his Yiga Clan set.[5]

History

Born over 100 years ago, Kohga was born into a militant faction of the Sheikah and inherited his name from his previous predecessor. Kohga would later become the head of the faction, renaming it the "Yiga Clan" and became a beloved figure in the clan.[6] In his lifetime prior to the awakening of Calamity Ganon, Kohga was also responsible for the Sheikah youth Sooga's recruitment into the Yiga Clan, whom maintained a close bond with him as he ascended the ranks and eventually became his second-in-command.[2]

Master Kohga is the leader of the Yiga Clan, a group of renegade Sheikah who split from the main group in Kakariko Village after Sheikah technology was banned ten thousand years earlier, and who now worship Calamity Ganon. Despite being held in apparent awe by his tribe, he is easily distracted and prone to temper tantrums.

He sends Yiga out into Hyrule to confront Link, disguised as merchants. Link later confronts him outside the Yiga Clan Hideout in his attempts to retrieve the Thunder Helm, stolen from the Gerudo by the Yiga. Kohga ultimately defeats himself by summoning a spiked iron ball too large for him to manipulate with his Magnesis powers, and it drives him into a bottomless chasm, apparently killing him.  Divine Beast Vah Naboris (Main Quest)

Enraged, the Yiga subsequently step up their attacks on Link. While the fake "merchants" begin to start battle with the cry "For Master Kohga", Yiga Blademasters and Yiga Footsoldiers also openly appear and attack Link.

— In-game description

The party first encounters Master Kohga in the Gerudo Desert, after fighting waves of Gerudo warriors led by Kohga, who was impersonating Urbosa to hinder their approach. Kohga is then exposed as the real Urbosa strikes him with lightning. He gets aggravated and teleports away. Kohga is then fought in the depths of the desert and is defeated, but gets bailed out by Sooga (the right hand of the inverted eye), who overpowers Link and Urbosa before carrying Kohga and teleporting himself and Kohga to their hideout.

At their hideout, he then gets scolded by a cloaked figure (later revealed to be Astor, the prophet of doom) as a result of his defeat.

He then coordinates an assassination attempt on Zelda, lead by his right-hand man Sooga who distracts the party with false intel, leading them to a Hinox to buy Sooga time to attack Zelda.

After the Sheikah Towers are discovered, Kohga speaks with Astor, concerned that Link and his allies may have more of a read on their activity. In this meeting, Kohga instructs Sooga to have some manners, as they are witnessing "a directive from Lord Ganon".

The Hyrulean army then attacks the Yiga Clan Hideout and face Kohga in his own territory. During battle, Sooga appears to try to help Kohga despite not yet having recovered from his previous fight with the party. Despite his help, they are both defeated and retreat. On top of the cliffs, following their defeat, they confront Astor as they have grown unsatisfied with his foresight, which proved inaccurate because they had lost the battle. He tries to assure them their defeat must have been fate and says that turning against him means turning against Ganon, which frightens the pair enough for them to stay on Astor's side.

Following the start of the Calamity and the initial defeat of the Blight Ganons, Kohga and Sooga then confront Astor after he starts extracting the souls of Yiga Clansmen to revive the Blight Ganons. Astor then sends a Hollow of Link out against them so they can finally be useful as sacrifices for the Calamity. Sooga fights the Hollow, ordering Kohga to run, but Kohga refuses, calling Sooga his best lackey and continuing to fight, with Sooga offering to protect Kohga with his life. It is implied Sooga sacrificed himself for Kohga to escape as this is the last he is seen (excluding the credits), though his death is not seen or even outright stated.

Kohga then begrudgingly asks for the help of the Hyrulean Forces to help avenge his friends, disguised as a Hylian Captain to avoid immediate detection. Due to his passionate hatred for Astor and crippled numbers, the Yiga Master's offer seemed genuine, thus Princess Zelda accepted.

At the Great Plateau, Kohga claims he is reluctant to help the Hyrulean Forces but does so regardless and helps them reach the Shrine of Resurrection.

Once at the Temple of Time, he is deeply touched when Zelda is reunited with King Rhoam, likely because he feels for her after having seemingly lost his best friend and right hand Sooga to the forces of Astor.

In Hyrule Castle, Kohga is excited to get revenge for his killed Clansmen, and later helps stop a group of Guardians from attacking the rest of the group as they fight Astor and Harbinger Ganon. He is, like everyone else, present in the final battle against Ganon.
