Fireblight Ganon is a boss in Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity. It was sent by Calamity Ganon to corrupt the Divine Beast Vah Rudania.

Breath of the Wild

Fireblight-ganon.jpg

"This phantom of Ganon attacked the Divine Beast Vah Rudania and was responsible for the demise of the Champion Daruk. It attacks with a greatsword and fire magic."

— In-game description

Fireblight Ganon killed Daruk during the Great Calamity, taking control of Vah Rudania for Calamity Ganon. It eventually serves as boss of the dungeon when Link came to free it of Ganon's control 100 years later. If Link doesn't fight Fireblight Ganon inside of Vah Rudania, he will later encounter the boss in the Sanctum inside of Hyrule Castle, where he will be the third Blight that Link faces there.

In the EX Champion Daruk's Song DLC quest, Fireblight Ganon is fought again with limited equipment in the Illusory Realm.

Strategy

Phase 1

During the first phase of Fireblight Ganon, it will wield a massive axe and will try to attack you. Its vertical slashes can be dodged by jumping sideways, whereas its horizontal slash can be dodged by jumping over them. Alternatively, you can avoid everything by keeping your distance. However, We think the best way to defeat it is to strategically dodge one of its attacks, allowing you to perform a Flurry Rush, and hit him multiple times with whatever is your most powerful weapon.

During this phase, Fireblight Ganon will occasionally do consecutive horizontal slashes, so be careful. It will also occasionally throw out a bunch of small fireballs in your direction and I would suggest quickly running away or blocking them if you have a powerful shield. After half of its health is depleted, it will transition to the second phase of the battle.

Phase 2

This second phase of Fireblight Ganon is actually somewhat easier. It will now float higher above and you will no longer be able to hit it with your sword. Fireblight Ganon will shoot fireballs out at you and you can either hide behind a pillar, or more effectively, just shoot them with an arrow to disintegrate them.

The key to defeating Fireblight Ganon is to use bombs. When it is charging up its fireball attack, it is sucking all nearby objects in the air. Toss a bomb in its direction and it'll suck it up, much like an Octorok. Detonate the bomb and Fireblight Ganon will come crashing down. Run on over and deliver some sword slashes.

Fireblight Ganon's final attacks will come in the form of a laser attack, much like a Guardian. We suggest running behind a pillar to avoid taking damage. While it's flying around the room, you can now use any projectile, including arrows as well as just launching items at it. If you run out of items, you can still use bombs to deal damage. Just keep at it until Fireblight Ganon has been defeated.

Phase 2 Skip

It is actually possible to skip Phase 2 of the fight entirely, but this is extremely difficult, as Fireblight Ganon must be reduced all the way to 0 HP from above the Phase 2 threshold in a single frame. Difficult as it is, if an enemy is hit by Stasis+ and then multiple attacks are dealt to them while under the effect of Stasis+, all damage they would've taken during Statis+ will be dealt to them, instantaneously. Thus, it becomes possible for multiple hits to be dealt in the same frame to Fireblight Ganon, and possible for those hits to rack up enough damage.

Because Statis+ will wear off on Fireblight Ganon extremely quickly, the primary method to rack up enough damage on Fireblight Ganon is to get in midair for bullet time and spam enough bow shots to deal enough damage. Depending on the circumstances in which Fireblight is being fought, this may take anywhere from 800 to 2000 damage to kill the boss in one go; regardless, the best way to rack up that damage is to use a 5-shot Savage Lynel Bow with Ancient Arrows, Ancient Proficiency and a Lv3 Attack Up meal. If enough damage has been dealt, the upon the expiration of Statis+, Fireblight Ganon will instantly die; he will still do his Phase 2 transition, but the fight will end as soon as that cutscene ends.

Additionally, an alternative method for skipping Phase 2 of the Fireblight fight exists if Fireblight is the first of the four Blights to be fought, and is fought in Divine Beast Vah Rudania, giving it its lowest possible HP pool of 800. In this scenario, it is actually possible for a single hit to deal more than 400 damage with a sufficiently powerful weapon, skipping Phase 2 entirely if enough damage was done during Phase 1 without outright ending Phase 1. With Ancient Proficiency, a Lv3 Attack Up meal and a Critical Hit (caused by throwing a melee weapon), an Ancient-type weapon with 50 base attack or a Guardian-type weapon with 57 base attack can deal more than 400 damage when thrown, such that Phase 2 can be skipped if Phase 1 is carefully damaged down for a finishing throw. Notably, an Ancient Battle Axe++ deals 421 damage when thrown (requiring Fireblight take 379-399 damage beforehand), an Ancient Battle Axe++ with a maximum +15 might modifier deals 526 damage (requiring 274-399 damage beforehand) and an Ancient Bladesaw deals 445 damage (requiring 355-399 damage beforehand). Other Ancient- or Guardian- weapons can suffice, but great care must be taken not to deal too much damage to Fireblight before moving in for the kill, as otherwise Phase 2 will commence and landing a weapon throw will become difficult or unnecessary.

Health Points

As with all the Blights, this Blight's Health Points (HP) depend on a number of factors, including the place where they're fought, and given that circumstance, the number of Blights that have been defeated before it.

Location of Fight Location Dependent
Calculation
1st Blight
2nd Blight
3rd Blight
4th Blight
Hyrule Castle's Sanctum HP + 3 × (HP / 2)
Base HP for Blights at location = 800
Not dependent of previous encounters so:
800 + 3(800/2) = 2000 HP for every Blight
2000 HP 2000 HP 2000 HP 2000 HP
Divine Beast HP + (Nº of previous Blights defeated) × (HP / 2)
Base HP for Blights at location = 800
Dependent of previous encounters,
as it's cumulative
800 + 0(800/2)
=
800 HP
800 + 1(800/2)
=
1200 HP
800 + 2(800/2)
=
1600 HP
800 + 3(800/2)
=
2000 HP
Illusory Realm (DLC)[HP 1] HP + 4 × (HP / 2)
Base HP for Blights at location = 500
Not dependent of previous encounters
except for access to Illusory Realm, so:
500 + 4(500/2) = 1500 HP for every Blight
1500 HP 1500 HP 1500 HP 1500 HP

Footnotes

  1. Unlocking EX The Champions' Ballad DLC requires defeating all the Blights, the recovery of the Divine Beasts and completion of their respective quests.

Age of Calamity

Daruk vs Fireblight Ganon - HWAoC.jpg

When Calamity Ganon emerges from Hyrule Castle, its sends four Blight Ganons to the Divine Beasts in order to corrupt them and kill their pilots. Daruk is stuck inside Divine Beast Vah Rudania when he is attacked by Fireblight Ganon, and he fights back, and he ends up using Daruk's Protection often refusing to back down. Eventually Fireblight Ganon slams hard onto Daruk's forcefield which shatters it and stuns Daruk which renders him in a helpless state as it proceeds to throw a large fiery rock at him. Before he could be struck down, the Gate of Time from Terrako appears and Yunobo comes out and uses a similar barrier to block the lethal blow, much to Daruk's surprise that another Goron can use his power, but Yunobo assures him that he is there to help. As Fireblight Ganon intimidates them, Yunobo starts trembling until Daruk stands between them to return the favor as he reminded the young Goron to stay calm. Yunobo's support to Daruk has brought enough time for Link and his friends to arrive, and with their combined efforts, Fireblight Ganon is annihilated, having failed to take Daruk's life and Vah Rudania.

Later, after the Champions and the Divine Beasts were saved, Astor betrays the Yiga Clan by using the Yiga soldiers as blood sacrifices to revive the Blight Ganons and he sends them after Master Kohga and Sooga in an attempt to do the same thing with them. In the EX The Yiga Clan's Retreat Guardian of Remembrance DLC Scenario, Fireblight Ganon and its elemental counterparts pursue the Yiga Clan and eventually managed to surround them, but Sooga uses a Yiga technique to immobilize them in order to allow Kohga and the survivors to escape while being left alone with the Blights. What happens to Sooga is currently a mystery.

In the Each Step Like Thunder Scenario, Astor summons Fireblight Ganon and the other blights and pits them against Link, Princess Zelda, and Impa. Link is left to deal with them alone while Impa and Zelda make a run for it, but the latter refuses to let Link die and runs back to protect him which causes her power to surface and stun the Blight Ganons and deactivate the surrounding Guardians. Fireblight Ganon and its elemental counterparts pursue Purah and her allies to prevent them from activating the failsafe, but they are defeated again.

In The Future of Hyrule Scenario, Fireblight Ganon and the other blights appear one last time to stop the warriors from reaching the sanctum, but they are all defeated for good before they head up to Astor, Harbinger Ganon, and eventually Calamity Ganon itself.

Fireblight Ganon's design is somewhat different than it was in Breath of the Wild, with its large sword being a fiery orange and its hair being made of fire rather than standard red hair, making it more threatening. Its boss fight is much more balanced. even when the difficulty is set to Easy.
