BowWow is Madam MeowMeow's most prized and adored pet in Link's Awakening.[1] He is one of three Chain Chomps that Madam MeowMeow owns, being the watchdog of the three.[2] Unlike CiaoCiao and ChowChow, BowWow is chained to a post outside the door of his owner's house in Mabe Village and is not allowed in there.[3] He is treated by Madam MeowMeow similarly to how a Dog would be treated by humans, such as him being chained to a post in Madam MeowMeow's yard, Madam MeowMeow bragging about how nice BowWow's fur coat is,[4] and even the map telling passers-by to avoid the "Dog".[5]

Story

Dognapped

Once Link obtains the Full Moon Cello from Tail Cave and returns to Mabe Village, he is informed by the Island Quadruplets that BowWow has recently been dognapped by the henchmen of the Moblin Chief.[6][7] To learn more about the tragedy, Link can talk to Grandma Yahoo to see what happened at Madam MeowMeow's house.[8] If Link talks to Madam MeowMeow, she frantically begs for Link to rescue BowWow.[9][10] Link soon finds out that the Moblin Chief and his gang are hiding in Moblin Cave, a cave located in the Tal Tal Heights region.[11][12]

When Link travels to the hideout, the Moblins attack him because he looks suspicious.[13] Nevertheless, Link defeats the henchmen and marches forth through their hideout to save BowWow.[14] Once entering the room, King Moblin recognizes Link is there to save BowWow and attacks Link.[15]

Once Link defeats King Moblin, the room where BowWow is being held prisoner is revealed.[16] Link unties BowWow's chain from the rock and returns to Mabe Village to bring back BowWow to Madam MeowMeow.[17][18] On the way toward Mabe Village, BowWow and Link meet with the Owl, commenting on how fierce the animal looks and keeping Link on task for the next Instrument of the Sirens.[19]

Walking BowWow

After returning to Mabe Village, Madam MeowMeow is grateful and asks Link to take BowWow for a walk around Koholint Island.[20][21] Because of his sharp nose, BowWow can sniff up secrets buried beneath the ground to help Link search for Secret Seashells.[22][23][24] Being a loyal companion, he will also eat most enemies in Link's way.[24][25] Moreover, his favorite treats are the indigestible flowers of Goponga Swamp.[26][27] As a result, BowWow is the only individual that is allowed to enter Goponga Swamp.[28] In order for Link to obtain the second Instrument of the Sirens, he should walk with BowWow to the swamp, where BowWow can eat the Goponga Flowers blocking the entrance to Bottle Grotto, the second dungeon in Link's Awakening.[29][30]

After Link retrieves the Conch Horn from Bottle Grotto, he must return BowWow to his owner.[31][32] Overjoyed, Madam MeowMeow rewards Link with a kiss for all he has done for her and BowWow.[1][33][34] Leaving Madam MeowMeow's house, Link once again sees BowWow chained up to the post, where he is seen for the rest of Link's adventure.[35] If Link does not return BowWow to Madam MeowMeow, he cannot continue with his quest to awaken the Wind Fish because Richard will not allow Link to help him while BowWow is in his villa.[36]

Link Plays With BowWow!

Photograph

In the DX version of the game, there is a picture for Link's Photo Album of BowWow.[37] After meeting the Photographer, Link can walk in front of BowWow to trigger the event where the Photographer will try to take a picture of the two of them.[38] As Link inches closer and closer to BowWow, he gets more and more aggravated, and he eventually chases Link away just as the Photographer takes the picture.[39][40] The picture is titled, "Link Plays With BowWow".[38]

Non-Canon Appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

Hyrule Warriors

BowWow makes a minor appearance in Hyrule Warriors as a weapon when Link obtains the level 3 Gauntlets, the Power Gloves. While BowWow does not eat enemies like in Link's Awakening, Link is able to use BowWow in battle by swinging him around like the Ball and Chain in the Silver Gauntlets and Golden Gauntlets. However, BowWow has small differences from the other Ball and Chains such as chomping when Link evades an enemy's attack or when he attacks. Also, when Link performs his Special Attack, BowWow will bite down into the ground.
