1.1 Aru Ainu
The quest begins with an option of going to Aru Ainu, Sakado or Kobitan. Head over to Aru Ainu first.
Walk to the left, and then back to the right. Warthogs will appear behind you, so kneel and slash your sword to defeat them. Keep walking to the right until you reach a tree. Jump up and watch out for the Warthog that appears. Walk over to the building and another warthog will appear on your left. Do not bother trying to defeat this enemy since the way the ground is shaped it can be rather difficult to attack properly. Enter the building.
There are keese flying around the cave and more keese will appear the longer that you are in this cave. It’s important to slash at them as soon as they get close to you since they can be quite annoying if they are left alive. Walk all the way to the left and then drop down to fight the Dodongo. The dodongo has a rather deadly horn attack that takes a full heart of damage. To combat it run close to the dodongo, kneel, hit him 2-3 times, and then quickly retreat. Repeat this same method, going in and out until the dodongo has been defeated. Slash at the key that dodongo leaves behind to collect it. Jump on the seemingly invisible platforms along the right side to get back to the top of the screen. Exit the cave.
Continue walking to the right and then enter the building at the end of Aru Ainu. Hit the woman with your sword to get her to talk. She gives you some advice about Gleeok, a boss we will face later, but will also give you a Green Shroud, an item that is effective against Gibdo. That’s all there is to do in Aru Ainu, so slash at the triforce symbol to return to the overworld map.
With Aru Ainu complete Tykogi Tower is now accessible; however, it is way too early to go there. Instead, just make your way to Sakado.
1.2 Sakado
Sakado is the main village of the game, and a place that we will be coming to often. There are a bunch of Arpagos and daira in this part of the town. There are two types of daira, ones that run towards you and try to hit you with an axe, while others that kneel stationary and toss their axe at you. Jump over the axe they toss and hit them once with your sword. The kneeling daira will give you 5 rubies each, while the other enemies give you 1 ruby. It’s important to gather as many rubies as you can at this point. The arpagos are red flying creatures that will swoop down to try to hit Zelda. Jump and slash your sword to defeat them, and collect the ruby that is left behind.
The first building in town is the shop, but ignore it for now. There are a number of buildings here, but most of them are useless as of now. Just walk all the way to the far right of this portion of the town, defeating all the enemies and collecting rubies. Enter the last house and speak with the woman here. She tells you to bring her some fairy dust and that she’ll make you a magic cloak. We’ll make note of that and return here at a later point in time. You can leave through the window to get to the other part of town, but there is no need for that at the moment. Instead, exit through the door and walk all the way back to the far left of town. Enter the shop, which is the first building.
There are three items for sale, bombs worth 20 rubies, rope worth 10 rubies, and lantern oil worth 5 rubies. Each item you buy gives you a quantity of 3 for the price of the rubies. In order to buy items, just slash at them with your sword. You should have at least 35 rubies by now, but if you don’t leave the building and just slash at some enemies until you do. Back inside the shop, slash at the bombs, rope, and lantern oil at least once for each item. Feel free to stock up on more if you have rubies. Once you are done shopping, stab the triforce symbol to return back to the overworld map.
Our next destination is over in Kobitan.
1.3 Kobitan
Right away there are two kneeling moblins tossing spears at you. In combination these fellows can be rather hard to avoid and perhaps the best method is to jump towards them right away and defeat them before they can get off many spears. If you are patient enough, you can block the spears they toss with Zelda’s shield.
Walk to the left and defeat the walking moblin. Get to the bottom of the screen by zigzagging across the grass and then continue walking to the left. There is a locked door along the path, as well as a number of moblins that will spawn. Keep going left and enter the last building.
There are two moblins stationed in this small house, and each of them will toss spears at Zelda. Stay at the far left, dodging the spears right when you enter the house. The trick here is to recognize the pattern. The moblins will each toss three consecutive spears and then take a few second break. During this relaxed period, quickly run over to the moblin on the lower lever and defeat it. Time the spears again, climb the steps, and defeat the second moblin. Slash at the item that is floating around in this room to get the Lantern. Using the lantern along with lantern oil will allow you to illuminate dark rooms and caves. Exit the house.
Walk back to the right just passed the house and you’ll see there is a path that heads northward. Jump up the path and then head left along the top part of the screen. Avoid the moblins and enter the last building on the left.
This building has an enemy acheman on the second level. It will move around on the higher ledge and toss a boomerang on a diagonal towards Zelda. Try to avoid the boomerang and walk a bit to the right side of the screen. Once you are about eight steps to the right of where you entered the room, you should be clear of the door, so go to your menu and select the lantern. Use it by pressing the number 2 button and it will light up the room. Climb the ladder here and hit the acheman with one swipe of your sword. Collect the blue ruby that is left for you. Now, walk to the right side of the screen and use one of the ropes that you purchased to climb to the higher ledge. Slash at the key to get collect it and then leave the cave.
Walk back to the right and then head down the grass area, defeating the moblins along the way. Walk back to the left and now that you have the key you can enter the first house, so do so. Speak with the woman here and she will ask you for an arpagos egg. Since we don’t have one quite yet, there is nothing we can do. Just climb the steps and strike the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
A new area known as Ahitaru is now accessible, but we first need to make a stop at the shop, so head to Sakado once again.
1.4 Sakado
Every time you enter Sakado you should always make your way through this first outdoor scene, killing any arpagos and diara in your way. In particular kill the three kneeling diaras, since each will give you a green ruby. In total, you should be able to get at least 20 rubies each trip.
Now that we have the lantern enter the second building from the left. The building is dark right from the start, so use the lantern to light up the room. There are annoying keese flying around this room and I suggest defeating them as soon as they come near you. Your first objective is to get rid of that kneeling moblin on the second level. Climb up the chain on the left side of the room and then quickly run towards the kneeling moblin. There is a sideways ladder, so while it looks like there may be a spot where you can fall through, you can actually walk right by.
With the moblin defeated, climb up the second chain on the left. Now jump to the narrow ledge in the middle of the room, being weary of keese that will spawn. From here, make a diagonal jump to get to the right side of the room. Quickly jump up and a moblin appears on the far left side. There is no need to defeat him, but instead, quickly enter the open door at the top of this building.
There are four annoying keese in this room, but try to defeat them without taking much damage. Run on over and slash at the power sword! This sword will allow Zelda to shoot a sword beam attack whenever she has full health. Additionally, once you get the sword, your hearts will fill back up. A diara will spawn from the right, so test out your new sword and then go back through the door. Defeat the keese right away and then quickly just fall down through this room, killing or avoiding the keese if they get in your way. Exit the building.
Go back to the far left part of the village and enter the shop, which is the first house. You will need to purchase some more bombs. In particular, you should have at least 12 bombs with you. If you don’t have the rubies, return outside and defeat some more enemies. With 12 bombs in hand, strike the triforce symbol and return to the overworld.
Our next destination is just north of Sakado in Ahitaru.
1.5 Ahitaru
There are some giant bees that are flying around this area. These bees are known as Boon, and they will come swooping towards Zelda, trying to fly into her. A simple sword slash will defeat them. Continue walking to the right, always jumping up to stay on the top pathway. Keep heading right and you’ll find a small cave near the bottom-right of the screen. Fight off any troublesome boon and enter the cave.
A fairly large enemy known as a Gohma will be found here. These giant orange creatures will pace around on the ground, trying to walk right into Zelda. They have quite a bit of health, so using your sword can be quite difficult. Instead, pull out a single bomb, kneel right near the gohma, and toss it to defeat it instantaneously. Pick up the blue ruby that is left behind and then exit the cave on the right side.
There is a second gohma located here, but be careful not to use too many bombs, as we’ll need at least ten bombs in this area. Luckily, you can avoid the gohma by jumping up to the top of the screen. Walk to the right, defeating the arpagos as they come. You’ll reach a small gap, and you will have to jump over it. This can be difficult as it is somewhat hard to tell how far along the rocks you can actually stand on. Inch as far as possible and then jump across. Even if you don’t make it to the top along the right side, you can still land at the lower area. Continue to the right and you’ll meet a young woman. Speak to her and she will give you some water to restore your life. She also gives you some advice about what to do next.
Continue walking to the right and you will see the bones of a giant dead fish. Right on top of the head of the fish is a boulder. Walk right up to the boulder and kneel down right next to it. Toss 10 bombs at this single boulder, and after the 10th one hits, the boulder will explode, so go inside. Speak to the fisherman man here and a key will be left for you. Grab the key and then hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
With Ahitaru now completed, Shutoy Lake is now accessible. However, we first want to head back to Sakado.
1.6 Sakado
Enter the shop right at the start of Sakado. You will want to stock up on both Lantern Oil and Ropes. You will also need at least one bomb, if you don’t have any remaining. I suggest having at the very least 7 uses of lantern oil as well as roughly 7 ropes. You might need a lot more, depending on how successful you are on your first try through the next few sections. It might be a good idea to just walk around Sakado for awhile, defeating the enemies over and over. Alternatively, you can keep returning to the overworld and then back to Sakado, and the kneeling Diaras will give you a green rupee each time. Nevertheless, be sure to purchase the necessary goodies from the shop.
Continue walking to the right in Sakado. The third building is still locked, so skip ahead and go into the fourth building. Climb the steps and then go through window to get to the other part of Sakado. You can head left and there is one house near the water. Inside you will find Impa, who gives you some information about the whereabouts of Link and the King. From the window where you reached this part of town, walk to the right and go into the first building here.
This room acts as a connection to the next room, but be careful. Once you step away from the door a kneeling diara appears and will toss an axe at you. To avoid it, jump on top of the chair and then jump up again. As you come down the axe will sail right over you. Go through the second door. This building is the home of the arpagos. There are so many of them here and they will just keep spawning. Climb the first two sets of stairs and then jump on the cupboard in the middle of the room. Use this as a ledge to diagonally jump to get to the left side of the room. From here, jump on the table and then jump onto the various ledges in this room as you make your way upward.
Be careful of the arpagos that will continuously spawn. If you have full power, use the sword beam when they are a distance from you to keep safe. Keep scaling the room and you will find an arpagos nest near the top. Inside the nest is an arpagos egg, so slash at it to recover it. Quickly fall back down through this room and go through the door at the bottom. Run to the other door, jumping over the axe that the diara throws. Go through the door to get back outside.
Just to the right of the building is the cemetery. It’s labeled by a small cave with a cross on top of it, so head into the cemetery. Pull out a bomb and toss it at the stone that is blocking your path to the left. You’ll see a ghost like enemy that appears and will chase after you. These creatures are known as Ghini and are extremely hard to avoid. If you have full hearts, use the sword beam to defeat them. If not, you’ll need to jump and slash at their head. It’s rather difficult to hit them without taking damage yourself. There are also green variants of the ghini, but they serve the same purpose.
You can head down the steps if you’d like, as you can easily get back up in various parts of the cemetery as you can jump on some of the items lying around. You’ll also run into new enemies known as Stalfos. These skeleton creatures are rather simple to defeat and will be done away with in just one sword slash. Walk all the way to the left and you’ll find a key at the top-left portion of the cemetery. Grab it and then start heading back to the right. Be careful of the ghini that appear and exit the graveyard.
Back in the village, you can walk to the far right of the town and enter the last building here. In this house you’ll find the fisherman that you saved earlier. Apparently he’s changed jobs and is now a blacksmith. He asks you to bring a heat crystal, and he will fix up your sword. We will return here later, so exit the building. Our final destination in Sakado is the building right next to the graveyard. With the key we got in the graveyard, enter it.
You’ll see a creepy cut-scene from the boss of Sakado, Gibdo. The building is dark, so use the lantern to light it up. Defeat the stalfos on the lower floor here and then use a rope to get to the second level. Be careful where you use the rope, since there is another stalfos here. Also, watch out for the ghini that appear throughout this building. Use a second rope to get to another higher platform and then a third rope to get even higher. There is a platform that resembles a nest in the center of the room and it is hanging by two chains. Jump onto the nest and defeat the stalfos on the side here.
Once you reach the top of the chain, you will find Gibdo, but be careful. You don’t want to actually go up to the top platform quite yet, as if you do, Gibdo might spawn right next to you, and if Gibdo touches you, it is an instant death. Instead slowly climb the chain, or jump up from the sides, to trigger Gibdo to spawn, without reaching the top ledge. Now carefully climb up the chains or use a rope to get to the top platform where Gibdo is. Pull you out the shroud and toss it at Gibdo to defeat the boss. After a rather humorous scene, slash at the triforce symbol that appears to get back to the overworld map.
With the boss of Sakado now defeated, Washubi Swamp is now accessible. However, since we just got the arpagos egg, let’s now head back to Kobitan.
Now that you have the sword beam, these moblins should be significantly easier. Defeat them and head to the left part of Kobitan. Stay along the bottom path and enter the first house found here. Speak to the woman again and Zelda will give her the arpagos egg. In return for the egg, the woman will give Zelda the flute. We will be using this a bit later, but for now hit the triforce symbol and return back to the overworld.
Our next destination will be the newly revealed Washubi Swamp.
1.7 Washubi Swamp
Brace yourself for the toughest part of the game yet! This area is filled with arpagos, snails, and pits of swamp that are crawling with alligators. The power sword is an absolute must and you’ll also need at least one rope. Bombs are not required but could be useful.
Right from the start use the power sword to hit the two snails, known as Lowder, as well as the arpagos that is sitting on the branch. Begin moving to the east, jumping to the second tree. Be careful, since arpagos will start appearing from both sides of the screen. Take the time to defeat them once they appear as you simply cannot outrun them in this level. Also, beware that when you are near the top of the screen, you will not be able to jump very far. It is as if there is an invisible ceiling at the top of the screen.
From the second tree, jump to the right side of the tree and slowly walk to the edge of the branch. If you still have full power, defeat one of the snails that is to the right. Make the jump onto the grass and then quickly defeat the snail and the arpagos that are nearby. Walk to the right and you’ll find another snail, along with a branch that is sticking out from the water. Just walk towards the swamp and Zelda will land right on top of it. Wait here until the alligator comes and then jump on its back. Ride the alligator to the right, defeating an arpagos on the way.
When you reach the next tree, jump off the alligator and land on the green bush area. From here, you can jump and slash at the snail on the branch. Then use a rope to climb to the branches of the tree. Walk over to the right side slowly and walk onto the small branch on the right. Walk to the edge and then jump towards the right side. Go through the door to get to the second part of the swamp.
Defeat the snail on the first tree as well as the arpagos that appear. Before jumping to the second tree, defeat the snail. Jump over to the second screen and be careful since you are now very close to the top of the screen, so your jumps won’t be very effective. On the right side of the second tree there are two branches, with a snail patrolling the bottom one. However, if bottom branch slopes downward, you won’t be able to defeat the snail if you are standing to the left of it. Instead, jump onto the top branch, and when the snail is crawling to the left, drop down to the lower branch. Quickly turn to the left and defeat the snail.
The third tree has another snail, but it is also sloping downward. You can toss a bomb to defeat this snail if you’d like. Alternatively, you’ll notice on the right side of the tree there are two branches. When the snail is moving to the right, you can quickly jump to the third tree and then jump to the higher branch on the right side. Now when the snail is moving to the left, you can just walk to the right and you’ll drop to the lower branch. Quickly turn to the left and defeat the snail.
The fourth tree has another snail, but this tree branch is upward sloping. If you have full power still, you can just use a sword beam to defeat the snail. Alternatively, you can toss a bomb to defeat this snail as well. Be careful though, as arpagos appear rapidly while you are in this area of the swamp. Additionally, you can just jump over to the right once the snail is moving to the right. Due to the slope of the branch, you can just kneel and hit this snail. Walk to the right and then just jump off the branch and you’ll land on the broken tree branch that is in the swamp.
Walk to the right edge of the tree branch that is in the swamp. There are two alligators here, but focus on the one that travels all the way to the right. Jump on its back when it comes near and then quickly jump onto the rock nearby. Finally jump up and go through the door.
Speak to the man here and he will ask you to bring him some Hanyu Spore. We don’t have that quite yet, so just hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld map.
Now that you reached the end of the Swamp, this will open up the passage leading to Hanyu Forest, which is our next destination.
1.8 Hanyu Forest
There are a few new enemies within the forest. Right from the start, you’ll see three blue enemies crawling around in the trees and on the ground. These foes are known as Bots and because of their small size, they can be quite difficult enemies. Much like snails, you have to be lower than them in order to defeat them. Defeat the one on the ground and then climb one of the ropes on the left. You want to jump off the rope and shoot a sword beam to defeat the other two bots. Also, another new enemy known as a Vire will also appear. These green dragons will fly down towards Zelda to try to attack her. Defeat them and then climb the rope once again and jump on the first tree.
Make your way to the right and jump over to the second tree. Defeat more bots and fall down to the grass area below, defeating more bots along the way. Continue traveling to the right, fighting bots and vires. There is a gap in the ground, so you’ll have to pass through the trees. Jump on over across the gap, defeating the bots in your way. Stay along the trees and area and make your way to the right. If you fall down to the area below, you will need to use a rope to get back up to the trees. Jump down to the tree on the right and go through the whole in the tree to reach a new area of the forest.
Walk all the way to the left, and then back to the right to get to the bottom portion of screen. Continue walking to the right, fighting and bots or vire that appear. On top of the rock here, you will find the Hanyu Spore. Slash at it to get the item. Jump up back to the higher area and continue to the right. You’ll find a woman walking around in this area and she will ask you if you have any arpagos feathers. We obviously don’t have them quite yet, but we will return here later. Use a rope to get back to the top and hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
The Fairy Pool will now be accessible. However, since we got the Hanyu Spore, we can give it to the man in the Washubi Swamp, so head back there.
Go through this treacherous swamp a second time. There is nothing different at all, so refer to the previous visit of Washubi Swamp if you need assistance.
Once you reach the very end of the swamp, enter the building and speak with the man once again. Now that you have the Hanyu Spore, he will convert your glove into the Power Glove! Exit the Washubi Swamp by hitting the triforce symbol.
Our next destination is the Fairy Pool. You will need a rope, so if you don’t have at least one rope with you, head on over to Sakado first and purchase one from the shop. Once you are ready, head over to the Fairy Pool.
1.9 The Fairy Pool
After a short cut-scene shows the three evil witches, you’ll gain control of Zelda. Your goal in this small level is simple, defeat the three witches. Luckily, just one simple sword beam will defeat them. However, the fairies will toss fireballs towards Zelda, and if one of them hits you, it will be an instant death. There is a pattern in how these fairies toss their fireballs. They will toss two of them consecutively, and then pause for a moment before tossing two more. Be sure to move back around, as the witches will change the direction the fireballs are moving in.
Furthermore, this stage is dark, so you will need to use the lantern to keep it lit. From the start of the level, walk all the way to the left and then jump up the rocks. The first witch is located just to the right, so carefully shoot a sword beam at her, while avoiding the fireball attack. With one witch down, walk to the right to reach a tree branch hanging over the ledge.
Be careful as both of the other two witches will toss fireballs at you. Drop down to the ground level and when you can sneak by the fireballs, move to the right and shoot a sword beam at the witch near the bottom-right of the level. The third and final witch is located at the top-right part of the screen. There is a branch hanging downward, which Zelda can climb up. Wait for the witch to toss two fireballs towards you, avoid them, and quickly climb the branch. Shoot a sword beam to defeat the third and final witch.
With the evil witches now defeated, two good fairies will appear. Walk over and talk to them and they will reward you with a Life Heart, Fairy Dust, and some Water of Life. The life heart will increase Zelda’s overall life to four heart containers instead of three. The fairy dust, if you recall, was desired by the woman living in Sakado. The water of life serves as a potion and we will return here later once we have a canteen. Hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
With the Fairy Pool now completed, the Gobiyan Ship will now be accessible. However, our next destination will be back in Sakado.
You will need some rope while in the Gobiyan Ship, so stock up on some if you have rubies. Additionally, one of future destinations will be the Tykogi Tower, in which you’ll need to have at least 10 bombs. If you have the rubies, you should stock up on them.
Walk through the town, defeating the arpagos and diara, and then enter the last building on the right. Speak with the woman here and now that you have the fairy dust, she will give you the magic cloak. The magic cloak costs 20 rubies each time you use it, and it will cause Zelda to become invincible to attacks for a period of time.
There is nothing left to do in Sakado, so exit the village. Our next destination is the Gobiyan Ship, so go ahead and enter it.
1.10 Gobiyan Ship
The first part of this level requires you to get on the ship. Start by walking as far right as you can, and then head back left along the bottom path. Once you notice Zelda drops down just a bit, head to the right to reach the water. Be careful though as there is a water creature known as a Zola in the water. The Zola will spit out rocks towards you, so try to avoid them if you can. If you’d like to defeat the Zola right away, you can toss a bomb from the land, and if you get a direct hit, the Zola will be defeated.
You’ll notice there are a few alligators in the water here. You want to jump onto the alligator that is closer to the bottom of the screen. Carefully time the jump so that you land on the alligator. At this point, use your sword to defeat the zola if you haven’t already. This particular alligator will stay above water at all times, so you don’t have to worry about falling into the water just yet.
When the alligator moves all the way to the right, you’ll notice that there is another alligator in the water nearby. There is a pattern here and each time you move to the right on the alligator, the other alligator will be closer or further apart. Be patient and wait until the second alligator is close by and jump from alligator to alligator. Timing is crucial on this jump and it may take you a few tries to successfully complete the jump. From here, jump onto the rock and enter the gobiyan ship.
The ship is loaded with stalfos and ghini. Some of the stalfos here will give green rubies as a reward, so it can be a good place to stack up rubies if you need them. Right from the start, jump up to the right to get to the second level. Then keep heading right and climb the steps to get to the top of the ship. Walk to the right and you’ll notice a small window or door within the wood. Jump up to it and enter it to reach the top of the ship.
This place is flooded with more ghinis, so you will need to be quick. Climb the first rope all the way to the wood above. Then move just to the right and climb a second long rope to get to another wooden plank a bit higher up. Walk to the left and climb up another rope. Once you reach the top of the rope, use one of your own ropes to climb further. Slash at the glowing item here to get an Arpagos Feather. Now walk to the right and drop down to the lower ledge to get the key that is right here. Walk to the left and fall down back to the lower wooden ledge. Scale down the same two ropes and then go through the small window to get back to the main part of the ship.
Walk all the way to the right side of the ship and go through the large steel door. Climb down the steps and slash at the shield that is glowing near the bottom-right of the screen. This is the Reflecting Shield and this will be of use when battling a future boss. Slash at the triforce symbol to return to the overworld map.
Now that we have completed the gobiyan ship, the Shrine of Gamelon is now accessible. We aren’t quite ready for that, but since we did get the arpagos feather, let’s head back to hanyu forest.
1.11 Hanyu Forest
The forest is completely identical to the first time we were here. Make your way through this first screen just as before, defeating the zol and vires that are in your way. In the second area, at the far right portion of the screen, there is a woman walking around. Speak to her and now that you have an arpagos feather she will give you the Magic Cape. The magic cape will allow Zelda to jump further, but it requires five rubies each time you use it. With your new item in hand, hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
We now need to stock up on some items, so head to Sakado.
You’ll need to have at least 1ten bombs for our next destination, as well as some lantern oil and some ropes. So walk around Sakado, defeating enemies to collect some rubies. Enter the shop and purchase the goodies, making sure you have ten bombs. Then hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
We can now tackle the Tykogi Tower, so head on over.
1.12 Tykogi Tower
Impa will be walking around near the top of the screen. You can speak to her, and there will be a scene showing the various characters that have been taken to tykogi tower. Walk to the right and arpagos will fly around in the area, trying to harm you. Additionally there is an enemy octorok patrolling the area. Beware of the rocks that he shoots out towards you. These fellows have rather strong armor and will take a number of sword beams to defeat. The best method is to use a single bomb to defeat them. Be sure to pick up the valuable blue ruby they leave behind.
Continue heading to the east, defeat more arpagos, as well as a second massive octorok. Right by the second octorok, you’ll find boulder lying around on the ground. Much like the one we saw earlier, this boulder takes all of ten bombs to blow up. So use ten bombs, and then enter the actual Tykogi Tower.
Speak with the Chef here and he gives you some insight about the tower. He runs off back to Sakado but will leave behind a key for you. This area is dark and is filled with two new enemies, Wallmasters and Tinsuits. The wallmasters appear visibly on the wall and they cannot be defeated. If Zelda tries to walk by, they will pound her with a fist. The tinsuits are stronger enemies that require three sword slashes to defeat. However, if you can sneak behind a tinsuit, then a single sword slash will defeat them. Get rid of the first tinsuit as it makes your way down to you and light up the room with the candle.
Instead of dealing with the wallmasters, use a rope along the left side of the room to climb up to the wooden panel above. Make your way to the right side and then jump up to the stone platform. Walk all the way to the far right of the screen and jump up to see the wooden platform above. Use a second rope to get to this higher platform. There are two tinsuits on this level and you can take care of the first one easily by creeping to the edge and defeating it with a sword slash to the back once it has turned around. Don’t bother with the second one, instead, just slowly climb the steps that are nearby. Beware of the wallmaster that appears.
Stay on the right side of the room and use a rope to get to the higher ledge, where two more tinsuits appear. Defeat the one on the right by creeping up to the edge and hitting it in the back once it turns around. Jump to the left and defeat the second tinsuit. Jump up on the steps to see a wooden platform above, but don’t get any higher. Instead, go all the way to the left side of the screen and use one more rope. You’ll find one final tinsuit here, so defeat him just like the ones before. Avoid the wallmasters and go through the door here.
After a short scene, you’ll be ready to battle the boss of Tykogi Tower, Iron Knuckle. Climb the steps and walk up to the iron knuckle. Pull out the power glove and use it on the boss. This will trigger a scene showing Zelda using the glove to crumble the body of iron knuckle, revealing a heart in the middle. After the scene is over, Zelda will gain another Life Heart, increasing her overall health to five hearts. Grab the key that is left for you as well and head through the second door.
Speak with the mayor that is imprisoned here and he’ll ask you to cut off the chains. Jump up and cut of the chains to free the mayor. Before running off, he will give you the Magic Lantern. This functions just as the regular lantern, except that it keeps the room lit for a longer period of time each time it is used. Hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
With Tykogi Tower behind us the Dordung Cave is now accessible. Before heading over, let’s make a stop at the shop in Sakado.
You are going to need some more ropes, some lantern oil, as well as some bombs. Furthermore, you are going to need some extra rubies so that you can use the magic cape. Walk around town, defeating the enemies to collect rubies. Since we saved the chef from tykogi tower we can finally enter his house, which is the third one from the left. Speak with him and he’ll give you a loaf of bread, which will attract arpagos, and in turn, divert their attention from you. It really is quite a useless item, especially since after you use it once, you’ll have to return to the chef to get another loaf.
Continue walking around town, collecting rubies, and then enter the shop. Purchase items so you have at least five units of lantern oil, five bombs, and eight ropes. Additionally, make sure you have at least twenty extra rubies on the side for use of the cape. Once you have all these, hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld map.
We are now ready to tackle Dordung Cave, so let’s have at it.
1.13 Dordung Cave
Once you start the level, jump up the tree stump and start heading left. There is a new enemy found here known as a Kargarok. The kargarok come in two forms, one of them being red, and another being purple. They fly rather quickly and can be a nuisance towards Zelda. Luckily, one sword slash will do them in.
Continue walking to the left and at the edge of the cliff you’ll find a dodongo walking about the ground. Be careful as once you fall down and move to the left a bit, a second dodongo will appear. Fighting two dodongos, as well as kargaroks that appear, can be a burden for just your sword. Use a well timed bomb and you can defeat both dodongos at once. Alternatively you can drop down once the first dodongo has moved to the left and quickly defeat him. If you use this strategy do not move to the left much until the first dodongo has been defeated.
Continue walking to the left and then jump up the rocks. Jump onto the lone tree here and then jump over to the left side. Drop down to the ground level and then enter the cave at the end of the screen.
There are two new enemies that appear immediately and will shoot fire balls at you. These foes are known as gleeok heads. You can block their fireball attacks using your shield. Use a sword beam or just slash it with your sword to defeat the first enemy. The room will also turn dark, so use your magic lantern to light up the room. If you have full power, jump on the first ledge and from there you shoot a sword beam to defeat the second gleeok head. Now stand near the entrance and use a rope to climb up to the ice above.
A third gleeok head appears on the right side of the screen. Use your sword beam to defeat it. If you do not have full power, you can toss a bomb across the gap to defeat the gleeok head. Walk to the end of the ledge on the right and then use the magic cape and Zelda will jump over the gap. Walk to the right, jump up to the ice, and then jump over to the ice on the left. A fourth gleeok head appears on the right side of the screen, so defeat it with a sword slash.
Jump up to the ledges in the middle of the room and another gleeok head appears on the right. If you have full power, defeat it with a sword beam. If you don’t have full power, just quickly use a rope or magic cape to climb up to the higher ledge and run to the left.
The level boss Gleeok is on the next piece of ice above. Climb up to the ice and you can run up to Gleeok and use your sword or just toss a bomb at him to defeat him. Be careful as Gleeok will shoot rocks towards you, but these rocks shouldn’t be much of a problem. Once Gleeok has been defeated, collect the Heat Crystal that is left behind. Then jump over and hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld map.
Dodamai Palace is now accessible. However, since we now have the heat crystal, let’s return to Sakado one more time to get another goody.
Walk through the first area of town, defeating enemies and collecting rubies. Go through the last house and exit through the window to get to the second part of town. Now walk all the way to the far right once again and enter the last building.
Speak with the blacksmith here and Zelda will give him the heat crystal that she got from Gleeok. The blacksmith will forge the heat crystal and your sword, creating a more powerful sword. Now, even when Zelda doesn’t have full power, you can still shoot your sword beam. Exit the house. Return to the first half of Sakado by going through the window of the house. Return all the way back to the shop. Purchase some more ropes or lantern oil if you are short and then hit the triforce symbol.
Our next destination is Shutoy Lake, so let’s head there.
1.14 Shutoy Lake
Right when you enter the area, walk to the right and two dodongos will appear. Just shoot sword beams out repeatedly to get rid of these foes. Also watch out for arpagos that will come flying down towards you. There a set of ladders and two huts. For one of them the door is closed, while the other the door seems to be busted down. Enter the hut where there door is broken. Climb the ladder and get the key in this area. Once you get the key a moblin will appear. Carefully defeat him and then exit the hut.
Walk to the far right of the area. The top path will be filled with arpagos that appear and fly into, while the bottom path has the dodongos if you haven’t defeated them yet. Either way, make it to the far right of the area and head through the door. You’ll find Impa walking around, so you can chat with her to find out some information about what’s going on deeper within this level. Go through the door at the bottom part of the screen.
Jump down the two ladders and walk onto the wooden area that extends over the water. Wait for an alligator to come by and jump on its back. Ride the alligator to the right, and slash at the piranha sharks that come jumping out from under the water. Once you reach the other end of the water, jump off the alligator and onto the land. Walk to the right but be careful of the Zola that is in the water on the far right. He’s out of reach, so you cannot really defeat him, but just watch out for the rocks that he spits out towards you. Go through the door found here.
There are falling rocks coming down the wall here. There are also stones that stick out from the wall. Avoid the rocks that are falling and jump from stone to stone, scaling this massive wall. Once you reach the top where the rocks are falling down from, use a rope and then jump up to the door. Go through the door at the top of the tower.
The room will go dark, so light it up with the magic lantern. Walk to the edge and then jump over to the right. Go through the door on the right side. This room is filled with endless kargaroks that will come flying towards you. Avoid them and walk over to the door here but you’ll find that it is locked. Walk away from the door and a moblin will appear. Defeat the moblin to get a key and then head through the door.
Here you’ll fight the boss of Shutoy Lake, Wizrobe. Just walk to the far right part of the room and turn around, facing wizrobe. Since we got the reflecting shield earlier in the game, the fireballs that wizrobe tosses, will bounce right off your shield and will hit wizrobe, defeating wizrobe instantly. Grab the key that is left by wizrobe and then use a rope to get up to the higher area. Jump over to the door and head through it.
Use a bomb to blow up the skull wall that blocks your path and then speak with Lady Alma. In exchange for your troubles, Lady Alma will give you an empty canteen. Hit the Triforce symbol to return to the overworld map.
Reesong Palace is now accessible. However, before we go there, let’s fill up that canteen we just got. Head over to the Fairy Pool once again.
There are no enemies here anymore, so just make your way over to the fairies on the right side of the area. You’ll first need to walk to the left, climb the rocks, and then make your way to the right. It does turn dark, so you may need to use your lantern. Speak to the fairies and they will give you some water of life, which Zelda will put in her canteen. This serves as a potion, so when you are low on health, Zelda can drink this potion to fill up her life. After you use the water of life once the canteen will be empty. However, you can return to the Fairy Pool at any time to refill the canteen. Exit the Fairy Pool by hitting the Triforce Symbol.
Our next destination is the Dodamai Palace, so let’s head on over.
1.15 Dodamai Palace
Walk to the left and you’ll immediately find a new enemy. This spider-looking enemy is known as a Skulltula and it is fairly easy to defeat. Just shoot a single sword beam and it will be defeated. Continue walking to the left and more skulltulas will appear, so defeat them as they appear. Drop down to the bottom-left of the screen and speak with Impa. She will show you a scene of Ganon and his minions at work. Walk to the right and use a bomb to blow up the skull wall. Continue to the right and jump onto the alligator that swims to the ride. Ride the alligator into the cave.
There is a Zola in the water here, so be careful of the rocks that they spit out towards you. Jump off the alligator and then make your way to the right. Watch out for the keese that are also in this area. For the most part, just avoid the enemies and run to the gate at the far right. Go through the gate to reach a new area.
There are two gleeok heads in this room, one on each side. You can defeat them, but they re-spawn instantaneously. Additionally there are falling spikes on the left and right side of the screen, giving this room a sense of claustrophobia. At the top portion of the room we have two brand new enemies known as darknuts. These fellows patrol the area and wield large swords and shields. Jump up the steps, avoiding the gleeok heads fireballs as best you can. Once you reach the top, repeatedly shoot sword beams at the darknuts to defeat them. Alternatively, you can use a bomb to defeat them quicker and more safely. Pick up the key that is left and head through the door.
Walk to the right to move away from the door and then light the room up with the lantern. Climb up on the left side of the room and then go through the door here. There are some falling rocks in this room, but if you look carefully, you’ll notice that they fall in the same pattern. Do your best to recognize the pattern and climb the steps here. Once you’ve climbed the first set of steps, use a rope to bypass the left side of the room. Go through the door here.
Walk to the right and defeat two tinsuits that are walking. Now walk to the right and keep holding right. The boss of the level, Hectan, will be tossing fireballs at you. Just hold right and you’ll avoid the fireball. Quickly jump up the two ledges to get on his same level and then just stand there. If you move quickly enough Zelda will be standing there and have her shield held out, and this will block all the fireball attacks from Hectan.
Walk to the edge on the right, just before the gap in the floor. Just stand right at the edge and block Hectan’s attacks with your shield. Once Hectan is close enough, deliver a blow with your sword and Hectan will be defeated. Zelda will also gain the third and final Life Heart, increasing your overall health to six hearts. Jump over the gap and walk all the way to the right. Go through the small window here.
Speak with the man here and he’ll give you some advice on what you need to do. Strike the head of the portrait to enter Onkled’s chamber. Go back outside, walk all the way left, and go through the door here. Navigate through this room, avoiding the rocks to the best of your ability. Fall down the ladder on the left and then make your way up and down the steps to get back to the door. Go through it to get back to the dark room.
Be careful of the giant wallmaster right by the door. Use the magic cloak to easily get by and then enter the first door you see here. Both of these first two doors lead to the same room. Climb the steps and then jump and slash at the portrait. Grab the key that appears and head through the door. Speak with Onkled here and he will give you some advice on what you need to do. He leaves a key for you before he disappears. Hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
The Nokani Forest is now accessible. You will need plenty of lantern oil and ropes, so stop by Sakado if you need some, but then head to Nokani Forest.
1.16 Nokani Forest
Once you start the level, there are two new enemies immediately on the screen known as Goriyas. These goriyas will toss boomerangs towards Zelda. Quickly aim to the left and shoot a sword beam to defeat the first goriya. Jump on the tree stumps and shoot a second sword beam at the other goriya found here. Begin making your way left and you’ll run into some vire and zol that appear. These enemies are endless, so just defeat them once they appear and try to progress quickly through the level. You’ll find a third goriya here, so get rid of it with a sword beam. Walk towards the rock where the goriya was standing and jump up and left to get over the rock. Walk over and enter the tree stump at the left end of the screen.
You’ll encounter some more Zol in this vertical screen, as well as a new enemy known as a Moa. Moa are flying eyeballs that will try to attack Zelda. They are endless, so just try to move quickly through the room, defeating them whenever they get in the way. This forest will also turn dark at times, which means you’ll need to use your lantern from time to time.
Walk to the right a bit and use some rope to get up to the branch above. From here, climb the rope to get to some higher up branches. From this branch, you can use some well timed jumps to make your way up two more branches. You’ll then notice some rope that wraps around the tree on the left side. While it appears as if it is part of the background, you can actually jump and land on this rope. Do so and then climb the vertical rope on the far left of the screen. Defeat the zol here and go through the tree stump on the right side.
Walk to the middle of the screen and you can jump up three branches quite easily. From here, jump to the tree branch on the left side of the screen and then climb up the rope. Jump up the branches to the right to get to another rope. Climb this rope and you’ll find a woman walking around on the tree branch here. Speak to her and she will give you the Fairy Lantern. This lantern can be used to light up rooms and it does not use any lantern oil. Thus, you won’t need to spend any more rubies purchasing lantern oil. The lantern is also used to light up the area around Ganon, but you’ll still need the Wand to defeat him. Nevertheless, walk to the right and jump up some more branches. Hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
No new level will be revealed, since there are only two remaining levels. Reesong Palace is where Ganon can be found, but before we tackle Ganon, we need to get an item from the Shrine of Gamelon, so let’s head there.
1.17 Shrine of Gamelon
Right from the start, as you start scaling the level, you’ll find these devastating fire barrels that will roll down towards you. They are quite damaging and can be incredibly hard to avoid. If you have saved up a bunch of rubies, now would be a good time to make use of the magic cloak. Alternatively, you can try to jump over them with well timed jumps. If you do move quickly through the level, taking the shortcuts, you can get by with taking minimal damage.
Climb the ladder and then do your best to jump over the rolling barrel, or use the magic cloak. Once you pass the rock, a second barrel will appear. However, from just passed the rock, you’ll be able to jump up to the higher platform, avoiding the barrel all together. Speak with Impa here to find one of the strangest cut-scenes from the entire game. Continue to the left and climb the ladder here. Jump on top of the rock and then quickly jump up two platforms before any more barrels can pop out. Climb some more rocks until you are on the platform with the ladder.
Walk to the left side, as this will leave a small gap in the middle of the platform, which the fire barrels will fall through. Once a barrel falls, quickly jump to the right and head up the ladder. You can now see the end of the line, so make your way over, avoiding one single barrel that might pop up and go on to the next area.
There are more fire barrels in this area, as well as a new enemy known as an Ache. These bat-like enemies move very slowly, and are quite easy to defeat. They also give off a green ruby each time, and since they keep re-spawning, you can quickly build up rubies so that you can use the magic cloak. Quickly climb the rocks on the left side of the screen and then jump on the rock on the left side. Then jump onto the larger yellow rock here. This is a safety area as the barrels cannot harm you. You can stand on the yellow rock and defeat a number of aches to collect rubies.
Once barrels pass by, jump off the yellow rock towards the middle of the screen. Climb a number of rocks and you’ll reach an area with a stone-looking background. There is a large gap on the left side and you have to jump over it. Walk to the very left of the ledge, as far as you can go, and use the magic cape to jump over the large gap. Then climb up the stone, climb up the ladder, and jump up to the top of the area. Enter the area with the pillars to take on the boss of the Shrine of Gamelon.
This boss battle with Omfak is quite strange. His head will change from a horse head, to a lion head, and finally to just lips. Omfak is only vulnerable when his lips are showing. So patiently wait and try to avoid his attacks. Once his lips are showing, jump up and slash at the lips once with your sword to defeat Omfak. Your reward to defeating Omfak is none other than the Wand of Gamelon! Yes, the item that the game is named after. Unfortunately, it does absolutely nothing practical against any of the enemies or bosses in the game except for Ganon. Nevertheless, hit the triforce symbol to return to the overworld.
There is only place left to go and that is Reesong Palace. Before going there, we should make a few stops to prepare for a hard battle. First, you can go to the Fairy Pool to refill your canteen with some water of life. Next, you can go to the various locations, such as the first screen in Shutoy Lake to collect a bunch of rubies. Then, head over to Sakado to purchase some goodies.
First, you can go around town, defeating any enemies to get some more rubies. When you head to Reesong Palace, you’ll need an absolute minimum of ten bombs and two ropes. You no longer need any lantern oil since we have the fairy lantern. That being said, I suggest not heading to Reesong Palace unless you have at least twelve bombs, as well as four-five ropes. There are some places where bombs are not required, but very useful. Ropes are also useful just in case you fall down or lose a life after using one. With all those goodies in hand, you can leave the shop to return to the overworld map.
We are now ready for the final test. Make sure you have some loose rubies, as you’ll definitely want to have the magic cloak ready just in case you need it within Reesong Palace. With that said, let’s head to the Palace.
1.18 Reesong Palace
If you came to the Reesong Palace before getting the Fairy Lantern, you would have noticed that the enemies in this palace were invisible. However, you can now see them, but it’s still incredibly hard. Right from the start you want to just keep running right as fast as you can, only stopping to defeat the keese that appear. The reason being is that there is a rolling fire barrel trailing right behind you. The keese here will appear from above or from below. Just shoot a sword beam to kill the ones from above, and just quickly duck and shoot a sword beam for the ones below. Keep running to the right and then climb down the ladder at the end. If you are fast enough, you should be able to do this without the barrel ever reaching you.
We now need to walk all the way left and right away, there are two more fire barrels chasing after you. Just run to the left, but a number of keese will try to halt your path. There are a few options as to what you can do. The easiest method would be to use the magic cloak a number of times so that the fire barrels and keese don’t try to harm you. In this case just walk all the way to the left, passed the darknut, and through the door. The second option is to not even bother to stop to try to kill the keese or the darknut, but rather, just try to jump over them, all while holding left. If done correctly, you will be able to avoid the fire barrels, but you’ll likely lose 3-4 hearts. This method might take some practice.
The final method, which is quite difficult, but as you are running to the left, defeat the keese quickly until you reach a stone block that sticks out from the background. Jump on top of this small platform and jump over the fire barrels as they roll by. Defeat the keese as they appear and when the screen is as clear as it will get, continue to the left. The darknut will still give you some trouble, so just quickly defeat him, run right by him, or use the magic cloak. Either way, go through the door at the far left to reach the next area.
You can speak with Impa to receive some more cryptic words. Walk to the left and you’ll find that there are vires on this screen, as well as a dodongo walking around on the ground. Defeat the vire as they appear, and when the dodongo has moved to the left, drop down to the lower part of the screen. Run to the right and then turn around, hitting the dodongo with a number of sword beams to defeat it. Alternatively, you can use a bomb to defeat the dodongo much quicker.
Walk to the left and you’ll fight some more vires, and then see some falling rocks. Walk to the left to trigger a dodongo to appear, and then run back to the right so the falling rocks don’t bother you. Use some more sword beams to defeat the dodongo and then continue progressing to the left. Keep going left until you see a rope-like platform above. Keep an eye out for the pattern on how the rocks fall, and when it’s clear, use a rope to pull yourself up to the higher platform. Walk to the left and you’ll see a boulder. Use the power glove, or ten bombs to blow it up and enter the actual Palace.
This inner portion is dark, so use the fairy lantern to light up the room. There are two goriyas on the right side of the room, but we cannot quite get to them just yet. There is also a skulltula wandering around near the bottom-left portion of the room. Fall down and quickly defeat the skulltula. Jump up in the middle of the room and then climb the ladder. Watch out for the goriyas that toss their boomerangs at you. You can jump up and toss a bomb at these foes, or you can jump and shoot sword beams to get rid of them. Do so and then drop down on the right side of the room. Be careful of the falling spikes and go through the door.
This next room is dark as well, so use your fairy lantern often to keep it lit up. Also, there are two new enemies in this room. The head-looking enemy is the Stone Head and it will just move up and down shooting fireballs at you. Since the room quickly fills up with enemies and they have a lot of health, these enemies are quite difficult to defeat. You are better off simply avoiding the first one, since even if you defeat it, it will re-spawn immediately. The second enemy that is new is a Flying Fish, and it flies towards Zelda, simply trying to make contact with her. It’s wide, but short body makes it rather hard to hit, but a well time sword slash will defeat it instantly. Additionally, there are some vire that will appear in this room.
Climb the ladder on the right side and make your way up the room. There is a second Stone Head that appears on the left and this time you must defeat it. You can slash away with your sword, or alternatively, you can just toss a single bomb to defeat the Stone Head. Collect the key that is left behind and then continue scaling the room. Go through the door at the very top to get back outside.
Some more familiar foes appear in this area, in the form of arpagos, diara, and moblins. Just defeat them as you have always done and progress to the right. There is a door right nearby, but it is locked and we have to find a key that is buried deeper in the Palace. Walk to the right side of the screen and you’ll see what resembles a well. It’s basically a hole in the ground and this is what Impa was referring to earlier where we had to fall. You can also enter it from above, be pressing the 2nd button when standing next to the first boarded door.
This takes you to a new area in which Zelda will fall far down a large hole. You’ll fall down to a gated window. Just jump over to the right and be careful of the falling rocks. Time the rocks and once the path is clearly, quickly climb up the large ladder. At the top of the ladder walk to the grate and go through to the next area.
There are some falling spikes, as well as two goriyas right near the entrance of this room. Use a rope to climb up to the ledge above and quickly shoot sword beams at the two goriyas. Progress slowly to the right and you can use the magic cloak if you have an abundance of rubies. Continue to the right and at the far part of the room you’ll find a third goriya. Defeat this goriya as well and it will leave behind a key. Grab the key and then backtrack through the room and exit through the grate that you came in from.
Fall down the ladder on the right side, avoiding the rocks as you do so. Jump on over to the grated window on the left side of the screen and go through it. This takes you all the way back outside of the Palace, so we’ll have to head through certain areas a second time. Walk all the way to the left and go through the entrance found here. Make your way passed the skulltula and the goriyas to reach the door on the right side of the room. Then scale this large room, avoiding the vires as you head through the door at the top of the screen.
Back outside, walk to the right side, defeating the arpagos, diara, and moblin that get in your way. Now jump up onto the higher level and make your way left. Continue defeating enemies and head through the door to reach Ganon’s Lair.
After a creepy cut-scene showing Ganon in all his glory, the boss battle will begin. Ganon tosses dangerous fireballs that will take two full hearts of damage. However, after tossing three fireballs in a row, he will need to take a moment to regenerate his power. This is the perfect time to climb the ladder in this room. Pull out the Wand of Gamelon and toss it toward Ganon. After a cut-scene, Ganon will have been defeated and a key will be left behind. Grab the key and then scale this relatively harmless room. At the very top of the room, right by the door, watch out for the spikes falling from the ceiling. Go through the door and save King Harkinian! Enjoy the rather humorous ending!
