Unsung Heroes Of The Legend Of Zelda
Posted on May 23 2015 by Kira Koneko
There are many brave souls that we encounter throughout The Legend of Zelda series but only one who gets the most fanfare and appreciation for all his trials and tribulations. What about those other characters, that if not for them our green-clad hero would never have achieved his goals; are they not heroes too? What makes a true hero? If you look up the definition of hero you will find that it says: “a person, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” So would that not mean that there are many heroes in the Zelda series? As for most things within the world of the Zelda franchise, we will all have different characters that tugged on our heart strings most, or some that we might have related to better, and some that brought us the most joy and even encouraged us to overcome the many obstacles in the games. So who are your unsung heroes of The Legend of Zelda?
Join me as I share with you a few of my favorites past the break!

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds we meet a strange, purple cloaked character named Ravio who sets up shop inside Links home. During the course of our journey to save Hyrule, Ravio provides all the necessary armaments we need to aid us in our quest. He aids Link from the very beginning by offering advice on how to begin his journey and is always a source of encouragement. As we progress through the story we discover that by disguising his true identity Ravio has sacrificed all and fled his home to aid a complete stranger in saving a land not his own. At one point he even stands up to the person he is most loyal to, Princess Hilda and intercedes on Link’s behalf to convince her not to steal the Triforce and shame her ancestors. Once his true identity has been revealed and all his sacrifices are made known he still offers deference to Link by showing his gratitude at their meeting and wishing that some of Link’s bravery would be bestowed upon him. The humility, sacrifice, and courage that Ravio shows make him a true unsung hero.
Through our journey in the Zelda series we encounter many female characters that prove their valor in many ways. One such women is Sheik whom we meet in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. When we first meet Sheik we are unaware of her true identity, and that to escape capture has disguised herself as on of the Sheikah. Rather than saving herself she guides Link along his path as the Hero of Time, always seeming to be around in the darkest of moments. She remains steadfast and true even under the oppression of Ganondorf’s rule. Sheik tries to save the Zora by rescuing their Princess Ruto, all the while continuing to teach, guide, and direct Link through his many courageous deeds to save the Kingdom of Hyrule. Ultimately she sacrifices her anonymity, and we learn her true identity so that she may provide Link with the final thing he will need to defeat Ganondorf. There are many feelings as to Sheik as a character but none can change the fact that her deeds were courageous and deserving of the title of Hero.
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and such is the case with the adorable race of Minish we encounter in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. The Minish, also known as Piccori are a mice-like people almost completely invisible to the human eye. They came from the Minish World a long time ago and have provided the humans with many treasures throughout time, such as the Piccori Blade that they gave to the Hero of Men when mankind was threatened by monsters. There are many types of Piccori who seem to lead their lives simply to aid and bring joy to the humans of Hyrule. You will find Forest Minish, who like to make humans happy by hiding helpful items and even rupees all over the land of Hyrule. You will also encounter Town Minish who have left their home to live alongside the humans and help them with their tasks, even those tasks the humans might be too sleepy to complete. Sometimes we find heroes in the most unlikely of places and doing even the simplest of things to aid others in bettering their lives, which is definitely the case of these adorable little creatures.
There are many more heroes you will encounter through your journeys in The Legend of Zelda and many that you will encounter during your journeys in the real world as well. Thank you to all of the Unsung Heroes that sacrifice everyday for the freedoms and happiness of others.
