Twilight Princess on Occulus Rift

Here’s an odd occurrence. When one thinks of Zelda, or anythnig else really, on the Oculus Rift virtual reality visor, one would expect first-person visuals, no? Well, Twilight Princess breaks that commonality in YouTuber Normal Graham‘s video of the Gamecube/Wii classic in 3rd-person virtual reality. This is not the first of Graham’s VR game videos, but it is one of his more interesting. It is certainly tough to imagine through words alone, so hit the jump for the full video!
Oh, and in his words, “WARNING: So much profanity.”
This is running on the Dolphin Emulator, a Gamecube/Wii emulator, and man, is it odd. I will not say it is bad, certainly not – I would be curious to see more or it, in fact – but my, oh my, seeing Twilight Princess in this way throws my sense of immersion for a loop. Seeing a game’s HUD – for Zelda, hearts, item buttons, magic, etc. – in a fixed position on the screen still leaves one feeling like they are the character running around It is just something you lose notice of while adventuring, letting you stay immersed. This idea of seeing the HUD float in midair around Link makes you lose some immersion in that sense. It really makes you feel like a floating camera looking in on the character’s life. Also, with the camera shenanigans going on, I can only imagine the strangeness that would come with cutscenes.
That being said, if fiddled with, this could be really fun to see. If the HUD was put back in a fixed position, and the game was tweaked properly to work with the extra camera movement, I think playing like this would be totally fun, if not just really hilarious.
You can download the virtual reality add-on for the Dolphin Emulator here.
Did you enjoy the video? Does the virtual reality in Twilight Princess look good enough to play, or maybe to see a let’s play of? Drop a comment!
