ROM hacks come in all shapes and sizes. Some are made to exploit programming limitations to provide unique gameplay, some are made simply as jokes, and some are made to reinvent a title altogether. This ROM hack of 1986’s The Legend of Zelda, called The Legend of Zelda: Perils of Darkness, could be described as a DLC to it’s source material, but it is so much more than that.
Perils of Darkness features a complete overhaul of all the sprites from the original game, giving them a fresh and clean look, not unlike Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, but still retains the charm of the original Nintendo Entertainment System title. There is also a unique plot, branching off somewhere between Minish Cap and The Legend of Zelda, so don’t forget to open the ReadMe file when you play it!
In The Legend of Zelda: Perils of Darkness, you will find yourself exploring not only nine new dungeons, but a complete overworld with new terrain, regions, and secrets to find. The dungeons are not only true to the classic Legend of Zelda style, but also manages to effortlessly integrate puzzle styles that we usually only see in the 3D titles. Not only that, but we also see unique upgrades for the base items, as well as several completely new items.
Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Perils of Darkness feels extremely close if not exactly like an official Nintendo release, and has a polish that makes this ROM hack incredibly nostalgic.
