The Wind Waker HD will support Pro Controller

Zelda fans who haven’t been sold on the Wii U GamePad will not be forced to use it to play Nintendo’s upcoming Wind Waker remake. Along with the Wii U’s main tablet controller, The Wind Waker HD will also support the system’s official Wii U Pro Controller. This should come as welcome news to fans of the game’s original GameCube version, along with supporters of traditional video game controllers in general.

Nintendo’s Japaneses listing for The Wind Waker HD shows that the game will support both the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller. Overall, it isn’t surprising that a remake of a GameCube game would be made compatible with a classic-styled control device. The Wind Waker was originally made with a traditional controller design in mind after all. It’s gameplay should be a perfect fit for the Pro. Even if it can’t replicate the nostalgic feel of a GameCube controller perfectly, playing with the Pro should offer a very similar experience to the original.
Despite obvious nostalgia factors, I don’t see an overwhelming number of Zelda fans tossing aside their GamePads in favor of the Pro. Other than it’s tablet-like appearance and large central touchscreen, the GamePad mimics the shape of a traditional controller pretty closely already. Second screen enabled features, such as quick access to menus and the ability to play the game independent of a TV, will likely be too alluring for the Pro to compete with. It’s still great that Nintendo is considerate enough to give gamers a choice on matter. It just isn’t a choice I see anyone but the most adamant old-school Zelda gamers making.
