Fan-made games grow in popularity every year as modders reshape the landscape of their favorite titles to bring new joy to gamers globally. It’s especially fun when a modder takes a more seasoned Zelda game and mashes it up with a title from another beloved series, creating a brand new yet equally familiar, quirky adventure. That’s exactly what Mark Kurko did when he combined The Wind Waker with Banjo-Kazooie.

Kurko is heralded as a gold standard Banjo-Kazooie modder with a talent for quenching the thirst for nostalgia — just check out our previous reporting on his Ocarina of Time-inspired mod to see what we’re talking about. He decided to revisit an older project to fix bugs, add extra maps and new songs, include a new minigame, and a few other surprises. The result is the aptly titled The Legend of Banjo-Kazooie: The Bear Waker Deluxe.

The game is set in The Wind Waker‘s world, particularly in and around Outset Island, but players will also visit familiar locations like Hyrule Castle. Gamers can play as Banjo-Kazooie to collect items familiar to that series, such as Jiggies, Mumbo Tokens, and Honeycombs. They’ll also find many well-known NPCs and enemies replaced by those from Banjo-Kazooie, but thankfully, Link’s companion, the King of Red Lions remains in the game.

The Legend of Banjo Kazooie: The Bear Waker Deluxe released to the public on August 7th, 2024. You can find the link to download the game on Kurko’s YouTube channel.
