The return of traditional dungeons has been on nearly every Zelda fan’s wishlist since the release of Breath of the Wild. While the groundbreaking 2017 title did have its Divine Beasts and multitude of Shrines to take on the dungeon role, no one could ignore the conspicuous absence of traditional themed dungeons. Well, Tears of the Kingdom seems to be atoning for the sins of its predecessor, as the development team behind the game just confirmed that traditional dungeons are making a comeback.

In the third part of Nintendo’s extensive interview with Tears of the Kingdom‘s developers, game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, technical director Takuhiro Dohta, and art director Satoru Takizawa were directly asked about dungeons in the new game.

The team wasted no time confirming the return of traditional themed dungeons:

[Interviewer] We’ve only discussed the skies, but this title has its dungeons too, right?

Fujibayashi: Yes, we haven’t talked about the dungeons yet. They’ve changed from the previous game. For example, there is a dungeon that connects directly from Hyrule’s surface. If you dive from the sky straight into the dungeon, you’ll trigger an event. We think this will be a new experience that wasn’t possible in the previous game.

Dohta: We’ve made dungeons unique to their respective environments, so we think you’ll be able to enjoy the wide variety of regional characteristics.

Takizawa: Making a “wide variety” was pretty challenging. The four Divine Beasts were the dungeons in the last game, and they shared similar designs. This time, the dungeons are huge and each carry their own regional look and feel, just like traditional The Legend of Zelda games. We think they will provide a satisfying challenge for players. They were certainly a challenge to develop! (Laughs)

There you have it: “huge” dungeons, each carrying its “own regional look and feel.” Color me excited!

Ever since glimpses of Tears of the Kingdom‘s Sky Islands first made their way onto the internet, I had a suspicion that they’d be home to classic dungeons, with visual themes that match their environment. And whispers coming out of last month’s gameplay previews seemed to confirm my suspicions. To learn that such dungeons will be in the game, in both the sky and on the surface, is a dream come true. Now we can start speculating about how many dungeons will be in the game and about how “traditional” they will actually be.

Are you as excited as I am? Now that we know dungeons are for sure in the game, how do you want to see them implemented? Sound off in the comments!
