Keeping in line with its sales success in other regions last month, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom topped European game sales charts in the month of May, according to newly released GSD numbers. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the new Zelda title’s sales numbers last month were 2.5 times higher than those of the second-place game, Hogwarts Legacy.

European GSD May 2023 Top 10 (Digital + Physical)

1. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo)*
2. Hogwarts Legacy (Warner Bros)
3. FIFA 23 (EA)
4. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (EA)
5. Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar)
6. Far Cry 6 (Ubisoft)
7. NBA 2K23 (2K Games)
8. Dead Island 2 (Plaion)
9. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe* (Nintendo)
10. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 (Ubisoft)

Based on data currently available, Tears of the Kingdom is now Europe’s third best-selling game of 2023, behind only FIFA 23 and Hogwarts Legacy. It should be noted however that Nintendo does not share digital sales data with the GSD charts, while the respective publishers of the games mentioned above, EA and Warner Bros., do. When looking purely at physical sales, Tears of the Kingdom is in fact 2023’s top-selling game across European markets.

Tears of the Kingdom‘s success seems to be driving game software, hardware, and accessory sales across Europe as well. Nearly 10.6 million games, across both physical and digital formats, were sold in major European markets last month, a 33% jump from May 2022. The Nintendo Switch meanwhile saw a sales increase of 39% from last May, helping it overtake the PlayStation 5 as Europe’s best-selling console.

Video game accessory sales saw a 30% increase from last year, as 1.3 million accessories and toys-to-life figures were sold across Europe in May 2023. The Tears of the Kingdom Link amiibo, which released alongside the game, was Europe’s fifth best-selling game accessory last month.

While Tears of the Kingdom was the United Kingdom’s best-selling game last month, its streak of topping the UK weekly charts has finally come to an end. According to new numbers from market research group GfK, Tears of the Kingdom‘s sales numbers fell 36% last week, allowing Activision Blizzard’s Diablo IV to claim the top spot on the UK’s Boxed Charts.

GfK’s UK Boxed Top Ten for week ending June 10th, 2023:

1. Diablo 4
2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
3. Hogwarts Legacy
4. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
5. Street Fighter 6
6. FIFA 23
7. God of War: Ragnarok
8. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
9. Gran Turismo 7
10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

The streak may be broken, but Tears of the Kingdom still boasts the largest game launch in UK history.
