One of the key recurring events in the video game industry is The Game Developers Conference. GDC is a yearly conference that brings together programmers, artists, producers, game designers, audio professionals, business leaders, and journalists to foster community and showcase innovation. In addition to the various expos, lectures, and panels, the conference has its own set of awards (The Game Developers Choice Awards). GDC 2024 will take place in San Francisco from March 18th to March 24th.

In a recent post, GDC announced that a Tears of the Kingdom presentation will be coming to GDC 2024. The conference is titled “Tunes of the Kingdom: Evolving Physics and Sounds for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” and it will feature Technical Director Takuhiro Dohta, Lead Physics Programmer Takahiro Takayama, and Lead Sound Engineer Junya Osada. The presentation will explore “the physics-based gameplay and evolved sound design” of Tears of the Kingdom, and the challenges of iterating on the foundation established in Breath of the Wild.

Overall, Nintendo is very secretive about their development processes, so it is very exciting whenever we get insight into how they create their brilliant games. Given the enormous critical and commercials success of Tears of the Kingdom, as well as the game’s seven nominations for the 2024 Game Developers Choice Awards, a presentation on the game makes a great deal of sense. Breath of the Wild appeared at GDC in 2017 (shortly after the game’s March 3rd release), where the developers discussed breaking the conventions of the Zelda series, as well as the world design and mechanics of the 2017 game.

In addition to Tears of the Kingdom, there will also be a presentation lead by developers of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This presentation will focus on how the game honors the traditions of 2D Mario while also creating new surprises for players.
