Nintendo’s recent Corporate Briefing expanded on the backwards compatibility of the Switch successor further:
“In addition to being able to play Nintendo Switch software they currently own, consumers will be able to choose their next purchase from a broad selection of titles released for Nintendo Switch.”
Nintendo does have a history of offering backwards compatibility of games on second-generation consoles. The Nintendo 3DS could play the majority of DS games, and the Wii U can play the majority of Wii games.
This update, however, did not shed any light on an announcement regarding the release of the successor to the Switch, merely stating:
“Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”
Furukawa stated back in May that we would learn more about the Nintendo Switch’s successor “within this fiscal year,” which ends in March 2025.
