A few weeks ago, a rather convincing leak came out that purportedly was showing the entire final roster for Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS. While it had quite a few things going for it, many found ways to argue against it (e.g. general appearance, odd characters, etc.). One character in particular raised plenty of eyebrows and was heralded as a reason that this leak couldn’t possibly be true. Thanks to those currently streaming early copies of the game, however, we now know that this character is coming to the Smash Bros. series for the first time. While the new character, Duck Hunt Dog, is rather interesting and of itself, the greater ramifications are immediately clear: the leak’s credibility is now much stronger.

Just in observing the character, it’s clear that there’s been an effort to mix a feeling of modern and retro. Unlike retro characters such as Mr. Game & Watch, Duck Hunt Dog (and the bird who joins him) are graphically updated to match the quality of other Smash characters. His attacks, however, commonly use retro-styled graphics or, at the very least, callbacks. For a game as old as Duck Hunt, this makes a lot of sense, although the inclusion of the character will still require some getting used to.

What do you think of this character? In what I’ve seen, people either despise this inclusion or absolutely adore it. From what I’ve seen of how the character fights, I’m in the latter camp; I love some variety between characters (at least he’s not a clone!). If this confirmation really does validate the leak, are you satisfied with the final character roster for this game? If not, is DLC more necessary or appropriate?
