pOZuT3zThe newest Nintendo Direct has just been shown, and Masahiro Sakurai has blessed us with a lot of new and interesting content for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. on 3DS and Wii U, including release windows, online components, new modes, and of course, a whole load of Zelda series elements. Be aware that, as Sakurai states, any of this new content is subject to change before the final game. For now, we are taking a look at the brand new Zelda content.

Check the new features after the jump! (SPOILER WARNING!)

As Sakurai teased in a recent Miiverse post, more Zelda items are making appearances.

1

The Beetle will be a projectile weapon that can latch onto opponents from a distance and carry them off into the air. It figures that features of Skyward Sword would show up, being the most recent and, for some, the most recognizable game. It certainly has items that are easy to adjust to the style of Super Smash Bros., as is apparent with this and the recently shown Gust Bellows.

2

Another new item is the Bombchu, taking on its Phantom Hourglass appearance. As is to be expected, the Bombchu crawls along walls and ceilings until hitting someone or running out of fuse. In small spaces, this will prove interesting. If nothing else, it is always good to see new explosives on the battlefield.

We also got a new assist trophy. Though people often said it would be great to have Midna as a playable character, this will not be happening. Instead, she will be popping out of assist trophies and whipping her hair all around to knock opponents away.

Fi is also making a cameo, but only as one of the trophies.

5

Though a minor addition, Stalfos’ appearing in the 3DS version’s Smash Run mode may mean more than we think. As many of you likely saw in the video, several enemies from the Super Mario, Kid Icarus and Donkey Kong series are running about in the Smash Run stage, so Zelda enemies are likely showing up there as well. It is not like there are too few to choose from.

6

Of course, new music will be showing up. The 3DS version will have two songs included for each stage, but the Wii U version will have a probability-based song mixer for each stage, like what Super Smash Bros. Brawl offered. Above are some of the songs associated with the Skyloft stage. In the background of certain parts of the video, you could also hear an electric guitar arrangement of the Ballad of the Goddess, and the new orchestrated versions of Zelda’s Lullaby and the Gerudo Valley theme.

7

Likely the biggest reveal, at least for Zelda content, is Sheik appearing as an independent fighter. Due to Zelda’s new down-special move being Phantom Slash (which we will give details on soon), she can no longer transform into Sheik, making them separate fighters. The same split has occured between Samus and Zero Suit Samus. Sheik will also have two new moves: the Burst Grenade, a simple granade toss, and the Bouncing Fish, an aerial kick-flip attack.

It is also worth noting that Sakurai said that multiple characters’ movesets have been strengthened, and among the characters shown on-screen as he said this was Link. It is unclear how his moves have been changed, if at all.

And that is all of the newly confirmed Zelda-related details. There is still speculation on some topics, though, such as the appearance of bosses.

12

With the addition of the Yellow Devil and Ridley in the Wily’s Castle and Pyrosphere stages, perhaps Zelda bosses will be included as stage hazards as well. There is no shortage of great bosses to choose from, so one can only hope they use at least one.

The video certainly stirred things up in the Super Smash Bros. community. The video iteself was a lot to take in, throwing in new characters, stages, modes and more. With exiting news like customizable movesets and the 3DS’s 60 FPS running speed, and the possibly controversial news like the online match code of conduct, it will certainly be interesting to see the fan reaction once the game comes out.

Super Smash Bros. is set to be released on 3DS in summer of 2014, and on Wii U in winter of 2014.
