There’s something calming about smooth jazz. When I listen to it, I want to be in a coffee shop on a rainy day with a steaming mug of joe on my table, unwinding and savoring the atmosphere of the café around me. Thanks to The Deku Trio’s debut release, Zelda & Jazz, I can add a dash of Zelda into that daydream. Released earlier this month by listener-funded record label GameChops, the album features a total of 12 tracks from Ocarina of Time, each newly arranged for piano, drums, and upright bass.

These are the songs comprising Zelda & Jazz’s tracklist:

  1. “Ocarina of Time”
  2. “Zelda’s Lullaby”
  3. “Lost Woods”
  4. “Sheik’s Theme”
  5. “Gerudo Valley”
  6. “Song of Storms”
  7. “Jabu-Jabu’s Interlude”
  8. “Zora’s Domain”
  9. “Great Fairy’s Fountain”
  10. “Kakariko Lullaby”
  11. “Epona’s Song”
  12. “Gerudo Valley Reprise”

I’m a big fan of what The Deku Trio have done here. Zelda & Jazz is calm and cool. The jazz-inspired piano sounds fresh and turns these familiar tunes into smooth jazz standards. Brush-filled percussion and the walking bass keep everything chill and relaxed. The Deku Trio is a new project from Rob Araujo of Chillhop and Chris Davidson of GameChops and follows other albums in the GameChops Unplugged sub-label such as Zelda & Piano

Zelda & Jazz is out now on Bandcamp, YouTube, Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, and Deezer.

Before I put on a fresh pot of coffee, I want to know your thoughts on Zelda & Jazz. How do you feel about the smooth jazz arrangement of Ocarina of Time’s music? What game’s soundtrack do you want to hear The Deku Trio visit with its style? Head on down to the comments and share your opinions!
